Queens Upsets Wingate to Capture 2018 SAC Women's Tennis Championship
The third-seeded Queens University of Charlotte women’s tennis team upset top-seeded Wingate, 5-3, Saturday to win the 2018 South Atlantic Conference Women’s Tournament at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center. With the victory, the Royals earn an automatic berth into the NCAA national tournament.
CAYCE, S.C. - The third-seeded Queens University of Charlotte women's tennis team upset top-seeded Wingate, 5-3, Saturday to win the 2018 South Atlantic Conference Women's Tournament at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center. With the victory, the Royals earn an automatic berth into the NCAA national tournament.
Queens, which is ranked No. 36 nationally, improves to 16-3 overall, while the No. 12 nationally ranked Bulldogs slip to 20-4.
The Royals took an early 2-1 lead in the doubles competition after the No. 2 team of Carlotta Nassi/Isabel Fornies defeated Wingate's Claudia De Andreis/Sydney Homan, 8-2; and No. 3 Caroline Nielsen/Hannah Lehfeldt downed the Bulldogs' Chyi Lee/Oroma Womeodu, 8-1. Wingate's No. 1 team of Michela Verpelli/Maria Garcia downed Queens' Yana Fleyer/Sasha Davidzenka, 8-3, in the other doubles match.
In singles, No. 1 Michela Verpelli (W) def. Carlotta Nassi, 6-4, 6-2; No. 2 Yana Fleyer (Q) def. Claudia De Andreis (W), 6-3, 7-5; No. 3 Sasha Davidzenka (Q) def. Chyi Lee (W), 6-4, 2-6, 7-5; No. 4 Caroline Nielsen (Q) def. Oroma Womeodu (W), 6-2, 2-6, 6-0; and No. 6 Sydney Homan (W) def. Hannah Lehfeldt (Q), 6-4, 6-1. The No. 5 match between Queens' Isabel Fornies and Wingate's Marisa Ostoja was halted when the Royals reached the needed points to win.
Queens' Sasha Davidzenka was selected as the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
