Wingate Leads Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships After Day One
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Lincoln Memorial's Sterling Webb shattered the meet record in the women's pentathlon to highlight individual performances in day one of the 2025 SAC Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday. However, it is the Wingate Bulldogs who lead the men's and women's team standings.
Webb's mark of 3670 topped Melanie Welsing of Queens' previous best of 3541 which had stood since 2002.
After six scored events on the women's side, Wingate leads the pack with 44 points but Anderson (38) and Lenoir-Rhyne (37) are narrowly behind. Thanks in part to Webb's strong effort, LMU sits in fourth with 34 points while Catawba (26) and Newberry (22) round out the top six.
Newberry's Irma Watson-Perez set a meet record in the weight throw with a toss of 17.94m which bested her own mark in 2023 of 17.83. Rylie Jenkins earned a gold for Anderson in the pole vault while Carson-Newman's Sydney McCarty earned the top spot in the long jump. Catawba broke the meet record in the distance medley relay with a time of 12:16.55 to earn gold, besting the record of 12:17.39 held by Queens since 2022. Lastly, Wingate's Grace Burrell was the top finisher in the 5000m with a time of 17:20.70. Wingate finished 1-2-4-7-10 in that event to earn 25 points in the event.
Four events were scored on the men's side with Wingate leading the way with 48 points. Anderson sits in second place with 28 while Emory & Henry grabbed 19 to finish in third. Catawba, Mars Hill and Lenoir-Rhyne rounded out the top six.
Titouan Le Grix of Wingate won the 5000m with a time of 14:23,59, narrowly edging Anderson's Elliot Dotson by .02 seconds. Wingate dominated the event with seven of the top nine finishers. Anderson's DMR team took gold and set a meet record with a time of 10:16.09 to beat their own previous mark. Catawba's Javier Gomez-Wilson finished first in the long jump and Mars Hill's Jesse Shelton won the weight throw with a toss of 17.59m.
The final day of the SAC Indoor Track and Field Championship will begin tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. from the JDL Fast Track.
