Wingate's DMR Team and Mars Hill's Shelton Honored as SAC WePlayed Sports Men's Indoor T&F Athletes of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced its WePlayed Sports Men's Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for meets contested during the sixth week of competition. Wingate's Distance Medley Relay team earned the track honor Mars Hill's Jesse Shelton garnered field accolades.
The Wingate DMR crew had a huge Saturday, posting the second-fastest time in the NCAA Division II this season at the Doc Hale Virginia Tech Invitational. Team members are David Holman, Deon Sumpter, Jakob Rettschlag and Luca Poppe. The Bulldogs crossed the finish line in a blazing NCAA provisional and new school standard time of 9:40.09. This mark is 0.65 seconds faster than Wingate's time when they won the 2023 national title in the same event. Northwest Missouri State is the only D2 team to run faster than the Bulldogs this year (9:37.78).
Shelton, a sophomore thrower from Mars Hill, N.C., took first place at the Liberty Open in the shot put with a throw of 17.60 meters. The throw is a personal best and a program record and also ranks No. 12 in the nation this year.
