Newberry 16th, LMU 18th At NCAA Men’s Golf Regional Tournament
WILSON, N.C. - The Newberry College men's golf team is tied for 16th place and Lincoln Memorial University is in 18th place after the first round of the 2010 NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional in Wilson, N.C.
The scarlet and gray combined for a team stroke total of 297, 13-over par, at the par-71, 6,839-yard Wilson Country Club on Monday. Newberry trails tournament leader Lander University by 15 strokes. The Bearcats shot a 282 to pace the field and sit two strokes under par after round one.
Barry University occupies 2nd place and is also under par as a team after a first round stroke total of 283 (-1). Nova Southeastern University is in 3rd with a 285 (+1) while St. Leo University sits in 4th with a 288 (+4). Lynn University rounds out the top-5 with a 5-over par 289 in Monday's opening round play.
The top-5 teams and the top-2 student-athletes not with a team from each regional, regardless of region, will advance to the national tournament held on May 18-21 at The Sagamore Club in Noblesville, Ind. The finals will be hosted by the Indiana Sports Corporation, the University of Indianapolis, the Great Lakes Valley Conference, and the Hamilton County Sports Authority.
Individually, Newberry sophomore Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) shot a first round 72, 1-over par, and is tied for 22nd. Junior Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) shot a 74, 3-over par, and is tied for 48th.
Freshman Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) garnered an opening round stroke total of 75, 4-over par, and sitting in a tie for 62nd. Junior Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) finished Monday's play with a 76, 5-over par, and is tied for 76th.
Senior Sean Collard (Gauteng, South Africa) shot a first day 78, 7-over par, and is tied for 89th.
Lincoln Memorial shot a 302 in the first round. LMU's Eric Kennedy shot an opening-round 71 in the first round and is tied for 11th place. Josh Collins shot a 3-over 74. Cory Bartlett shot a 78, while Jamie Chapman shot a 79. Joshua Cornett had an 83.
Valdosta State University's Chesley Gunn leads the field individually after a 4-under par first round total of 67. The Blazers are tied for 6th.
The 54-hole tournament continues with the second round on Tuesday in Wilson, N.C.
