Carson-Newman's Charamba Named South Atlantic Conference 2022-23 Male Athlete of the Year
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Carson-Newman's Makanakaishe Charamba was named the 2022-23 South Atlantic Conference Male Athlete of the Year, the Conference announced today. The Male and Female Athlete of the Year awards are selected by a vote of the league's athletic directors.
Charamba, a sophomore from Harare, Zimbabwe, earned his second consecutive SAC Men's Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year honor and his second SAC Track & Field Athlete of the Year award of the year, having won the 2023 SAC Men's Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year Award. He was also named the 2023 SAC Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Meet at the 2023 SAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The 2023 USTFCCCA National and Southeast Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year, Charamba swept the 100 and 200-meter dashes at the 2023 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships, winning gold in both events, while taking home runner-up honors in the 4x100-meter relay. He turned in the seventh-fastest 100-meter dash time in NCAA Division II history earlier this year at 10.15 seconds. Charamba won the 2023 NCAA Division II National Championship in the men's 200-meter dash with a time of 20.55 seconds, setting a new Carson-Newman record in the event and setting the facility record at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
In addition to his national championship, Charamba placed seventh and earned All-American honors in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.82 seconds. Charamba also captured the 2023 SAC Indoor title in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.72 seconds and he was a member of the Eagles' 4x400-meter relay team that took fourth at the SAC Championship. Throughout the indoor season Charamba won five gold medals and turned in the fastest time in NCAA Division II in the 200m, running 20.99 seconds at the DII Pre-National meet.
