South Atlantic Conference Commissioner Patrick Britz Named President of the DII Conference Commissioners Association
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – South Atlantic Conference Commissioner Patrick Britz assumed the presidency of the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2 CCA) at the recent meeting of the group held June 20-22 in Chicago, Illinois.
Britz is entering his 10th year as Commissioner of the SAC and has served in a variety of D2 CCA and NCAA leadership roles leading up to his becoming president. In 2016-17 Britz was first vice president and, in that role, he served on the Executive Committee to guide the association’s activities and meetings. This is the second time the SAC commissioner will serve in this role as former commissioner, Doug Echols, was president of the group in 1995-96.
During Britz’s tenure as Commissioner, the SAC has grown from eight member institutions to 11 and expanded its championship sports sponsorship from 14 to 20. The league has also had tremendous athletic success during this time with Wingate claiming the SAC’s first ever national title in men’s soccer in the fall of 2016 and four other schools have advanced to the national championship game – Lenoir-Rhyne football and Carson-Newman men’s soccer in 2013, Catawba baseball in 2015 and Lincoln Memorial men’s basketball in 2016. In addition, the number of student-athletes that have been named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll for having a cumulative grade-point average of 3.3 or higher has grown from 822 in 2008-09 to 1,703 in 2016-17.
Britz graduated from the University of North Carolina Asheville and an MBA in Sports Business from Saint Leo University. While at UNC Asheville, he was a four-time academic all-conference selection for the Bulldogs soccer team and graduated as the school’s second all-time leading scorer. Britz was inducted in the UNC Asheville Athletics Hall of Fame in February 2007 and into the Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School (Winston-Salem, N.C.) Hall of Fame in October 2011.
The D2 CCA presidency has a term of one year and organization was started in 1992 to promote its member conferences and institutions. The D2 CCA has made its mark in providing a united front for NCAA Division II athletics. Created after the break-up of the College Divisions Commissioners Association, the D2 CCA continues to create lines of communication and opportunities for its member conferences. The D2 CCA is administered by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (MACDA), which is in its 53rd year.
