Carson-Newman's Owens Named 2023 South Atlantic Conference Women's Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Carson-Newman's Abby Owens was named the 2023 South Atlantic Conference Women's Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the Conference office announced today.
The South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is presented annually to one student-athlete in each of the Conference's championship sports and is voted on by the SAC's Faculty Athletic Representatives Committee. The winners are selected based on their achievements in academics, athletics, service, and leadership.
Owens, a senior from Ocala, Fla., holds a 4.0 grade point average while studying math and philosophy. She was named a Carson-Newman University Platinum Scholar all four years as she held a perfect 4.0 GPA. Owens was also named the 2023 South Atlantic Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field Wealth Enhancement Group Elite 23 Award winner. This award honors the student-athlete who has the top cumulative grade-point average in each of the league's 23 team championship events.
Between the indoor and outdoor SAC championships Owens has won the pole vault event at least once every year, most recently claiming the pole vault championship title this past outdoor season with a 3.78-meter mark. As a senior, she recorded four first-place finishes in the outdoor season. Owens is a four-time USTFCCCA All-Region honoree in the pole vault, an honor that is awarded to the top-five individuals in each event from each region.
