The South Atlantic Conference Announces AstroTurf Women's Track & Field Athlete of the Week Honors
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced its AstroTurf Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for meets contested during the sixth week of the outdoor track & field season. Queens' Melanie Welsing earned the track honor and Newberry's Irma Watson-Perez earned the field honor.
Welsing, a senior hurdler from Richmond, Ky., took home first place honors in both the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles at the LR Bears Open. Her time of 13.80 seconds in the 100H was an NCAA Division II provisional mark, and her time of 1:04.66 in the 400H was a personal best.
Watson-Perez, a freshman thrower from Sanford, Fla., took home the gold in two events at the LR Bears Open last week, winning the shot put and discus. She set a Newberry record in the shot put with a toss of 11.98 meters, while her 39.37-meter discus throw is the second best in program history. She also placed third in the hammer throw with a 40.11-meter throw.
