No. 3 Queens Wins 2016 South Atlantic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament Championship
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The third-seeded Queens Royals claimed the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament Championship with a 5-2 win over No. 1 Wingate Sunday afternoon at the McCoy Tennis Complex on the campus Brevard College in Brevard, N.C. With the win, Queens earns the South Atlantic Conference's automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA Women's Tennis Championship.
The Royals swept doubles play to take an early 3-0 lead. Marta Gonzalez and Melissa Laing of Queens defeated Andrea Terner and Oroma Womeodu from Wingate 9-8 (7-2) at the No. 1 flight. At the second position, Carlotta Nassi and Caroline Nielsen from Queens took the 8-3 win against Claudia De Andreis and Maria Garcia. The No. 3 slot saw Queens' Claire Hamilton and Hannah Lehfeldt defeat Laya Tanik and Sydney Homan, 9-7.
Tanik picked up a point for Wingate as she posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Hamilton at the No. 5 flight. Gonzalez moved the Royals to within one point of the conference championship 6-1, 6-3 win over Ternera at the No. 2 flight. The Bulldogs' Womeodo cut the lead to 4-2 as she defeated Laing 6-4, 6-1 on the third court. Lehfeldt secured the 5-2 win for Queens at the No. 6 flight with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 win against Homan.
Queens Nassi was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
