SAC Places 13 On Daktronics All-Southeast Region Women’s Soccer Team
GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Tusculum College's Danielle Tanner was named the 2008 Daktronics All-Southeast Region Women's Soccer Player of the Year and was one of 13 players from the South Atlantic Conference named to the first or second team.
The Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region Teams are voted on by the sports information directors of the Southeast Region. The region is comprised of the Conference Carolinas, the Peach Belt Conference, the South Atlantic Conference, Chowan University and North Greenville University.
Members of the first team are now eligible for Daktronics NCAA Division II All-America honors.

Tusculum
Tusculum had four all-region selections for the Pioneers. Along with Tanner, defender Nicole Ferris, midfielder Michelle Meade, and forward Kelly Barron were all selected to the all-region teams for the first time in their careers.
Tanner recently became the first player in Tusculum's women's soccer history to record consecutive 20-goal season, as she leads the Pioneers with 22 goals scored this year. A native of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Tanner has scored a SAC-high eight goals in league play this season, as well as a conference-best 19 points. The 5-7 forward led the conference with 49 points, 12 more than her closest competition.
This is Ferris' first Daktronics all-region selection, as the 5-10 senior posted a career-high seven assists this season to finish the year tied with Tanner for second on the team. A three-time ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District selection, Ferris was named the South Atlantic Conference Women's Soccer Scholar Athlete last week as well as receiving All-SAC Second Team honors.
Meade led the team with nine assists in her freshman season with the Pioneers. A native of Greeneville, Tenn., Meade finished the campaign second in the SAC in assists, playing in 17 matches and making six starts this season.
Barron finished her senior campaign with a career-high 14 goals which was the third-highest total in the SAC this season. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Barron was selected to the All-SAC Second Team for the first time in her career last week. The 5-0 forward finished the season with a career-best 31 points, which placed third in the conference.
Lenoir-Rhyne
The Lenoir-Rhyne University women's soccer team placed two players on the 2008 Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region Teams region.
Freshmen Laura Linehan (San Diego, Calif./University City HS) and Catherine Hauck (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary Prep HS) were named to the all-region first and second teams, respectively.
Linehan, a 5-6 forward, led the Bears in all offensive categories this season. The First-Team All-South Atlantic Conference honoree scored 16 goals including seven match-winners and dished out five assists for a total of 37 points. Linehan had four multi-goal matches including two of the first three matches of her collegiate career. Her season marks in goals scored and total points both rank fifth all-time for Lenoir-Rhyne.
Hauck, also an All-SAC First-Teamer, anchored a defense that allowed only 1.06 goals per match. The 5-5 defender broke into the scoring column with three goals and one assist including a two-goal night in the 2008 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals against Tusculum.
Lincoln Memorial University
Lincoln Memorial University midfielder Karina Campos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and defender Lea Cataggio (Aberdeen, MD) have been named to the Daktronics All-Southeast Region Women's Soccer First and Second Teams by the sports information directors throughout the region.
Campos, a two-year letter-winner led the team in goals scored and in total points this season with nine goals and two assists. In addition to being named First Team All-Southeast Region, Kampos was an All-South Atlantic Conference Second Team.
Cataggio, a senior sweeper was the anchor of the Lady Railsplitter defensive effort over the past two seasons and was also a Second Team All-South Atlantic Conference selection this year. During the 2008 season, Cataggio helped the Lady Railspl! ! itters record four shutouts this year and achieve a 11-6-1 season finish.
Carson-Newman
Caron-Newman defender Melissa Morris (Sweetwater, Tenn.) has been named to the 2008 Daktronics Women's Soccer All-Southeast Region first team, released Tuesday.
Morris keyed the Lady Eagles run to both the South Atlantic Conference regular season and tournament titles. She anchored a Lady Eagle defense that posted five shutouts in eight conference regular season matches. The sophomore transferred from Charlotte after her freshman year, and had an overwhelming impact on both her team and the SAC.
Carson-Newman (15-5-1) will host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament, beginning Friday. The Lady Eagles, who received a first-round bye, will face the winner of Friday's match between UNC Pembroke/Pfeiffer on Sunday afternoon. The second round match begins at 1 p.m. in Jefferson City.
Catawba
Catawba had a pair of players named to the 2008 Daktronics All-Southeast Region women's soccer team which was released on Tuesday. Senior defender Alyssa Schoenberg (Woodbury, MN/Woodbury HS) and senior midfielder Lainey Nichols (Frederick, MD/Middletown HS) were first team selections.
Schoenberg earns first team honors for the second straight year. The defender has started all 21 matches this season and has helped Catawba to ten shutouts over those matches. The Lady Indians have posted a 0.84 goals against average and are surrendering an average of eight shots per match. Schoenberg has added one goal.
Nichols has started 20 of 21 matches and was a second team all-region pick last season. She has scored four goals this season with two accounting for game-winners. The senior has earned one assist.
Wingate
Wingate University freshman midfielder Kelly Adams (Matthews, N.C.) was named to the 2008 Daktronics women's soccer All-Southeast Region first team, while graduate student midfielder Lisa Service (Omagh, Ireland) was a second team selection. The Daktronics All-Region teams are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Adams led the South Atlantic Conference with 13 assists during her first season. She was fourth in the league with a team-best 24 points. She had a goal and three assists in Wingate's 6-0 win over Chowan. Adams followed the Chowan performance with a pair of goals in a 4-0 win over Anderson.
A graduate of Porter Ridge High School, Adams had two goals and an assist in a 4-1 victory at North Georgia, followed by a three-assist performance against Lenoir-Rhyne. Adams handed out at least one assist in Wingate's last five games of the year. The SAC coaches voted Adams to the second team All-SAC squad.
Service provided significant leadership for Wingate in her final season in the Bulldog blue-and-gold. Service returned this season after missing 2007 with an injury.
In 2008, she scored one goal in a big 3-0 SAC victory over Tusculum. A four-year starter, she started all 19 matches in 2006 with two goals and four assists. Service scored the opening goal in a 2-1 victory over (then) NCAA Division II number four Tusculum during the 2006 season.
A first team All-SAC selection in 2006, Service is a regular member of the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll. Wingate completed the 2008 campaign 14-6 overall. The Bulldogs finished third in the SAC regular season standings. As a result of her first team honor, Adams will advance to the Daktronics All-American ballot.
