Carson-Newman Remain Fourth, Newberry Seventh, At NCAA Women’s Golf Regional
LAKELAND, Fla. - The Carson-Newman women's golf team shot a second-round 309 (+21) to remain in fourth place at the 2011 NCAA South Regional Tournament on Monday at The Club at Eaglebrooke in Lakeland, Fla.
The Newberry College women's golf team dropped eight strokes from their first round total but remain in seventh place. The Wolves shot a 309 on Tuesday, marking the 10th lowest team round in program history. Their two-round total of 626 is the ninth lowest in school history.
The Lady Eagles have a two-day total of 618 (+42) and are trailing top-ranked Nova Southeastern, No. 4 Rollins College and No. 2 Florida Southern.
Nova Southeastern, the two-time defending national champion, leads the tournament after shooting a 294 (+6) to bring its two-round total to 585 (+9). Rollins is eight shots off the lead with a two-day score of 593 (295-293, +17), while Florida Southern is in third with a score of 598 (309-289, +22).
The top three teams in the 54-hole event advance to the NCAA Division II Championships on May 12-14 in Allendale, Mich.
C-N leads South Atlantic Conference rival Newberry College by eight strokes. The Wolves are in seventh place with a two-day score of 626 (317-309, +50).
Lady Eagle freshman Mary Tunnell (Memphis, Tenn.) is in a tie for 10th after carding a 1-over-par 73 on Monday to bring her two-round total to 150 (+6).
Senior Jessica Tarbet (Corryton, Tenn.) and junior Jennifer Oliver (Knoxville, Tenn.) are in a tie for 20th after turning in a pair of 79s on Monday to bring their two-round total to 155 (+11).
Junior Erica Ray (Maryville, Tenn.) and sophomore Melanie Manis (Louisville, Tenn.) are tied for 33rd and 40th, respectively. Ray had a two-day total of 160 (80-80, +16), while Manis is at 162 (84-78, +18).
Newberry's Maria Luz Besio (Buenos Aires, Argentina) led the Wolves Tuesday, shooting an even par 72 on the 6,255-yard course. The junior jumped 23 places in the individual standings, as her 9-over par 153 through two rounds ties her for 14th overall.
Julia Daneshfar (Trophy Club, Texas) is now alone at 13th overall, a jump of nine spots after the first round. Daneshfar shot a 2-over par 74 on the day with two birdies on the back nine and is 8-over par at 152 through two rounds.
Lisa Brandl (Nuremberg, Germany) moved up five spots to 32nd overall after carding a 6-over par 78 Tuesday. She has shot a 15-over 159 through two rounds. Barbara Castro (Coruna, Spain) is in 43rd overall at 163 (19-over par) after a +13 (85) Tuesday, and Natalia Perez (Bogota, Colombia) is now 45th at 166 (22-over par) after a +14 (86) today.
The top three teams and top three individuals not on those three teams will advance to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. Daneshfar is currently in a qualifying spot and Besio is tied with three other players just one stroke back of her.
Nova Southeastern's Sandra Changkija fired a 4-under-par 68 on Monday to head into the final round with a five-stroke lead. Changkija has a two-day score of 140 (-4). Rollins' Joanna Cole and Fabia Rothenfluh are tied for second with scores of 145 (+1).
The final round will take place on Tuesday at The Club at Eaglebrooke.
