Carson-Newman, Newberry Qualify For NCAA South Region Women’s Golf Tournament
INDIANAPOLIS - The Newberry College and Carson-Newman College women's golf teams have qualified for the 2011 NCAA Division II South Regional tournament, the NCAA announced today.
Both the Wolves and the Eagles qualify for the NCAA regionals for the second consecutive season. Last year, Carson-Newman finished seventh in the regional, one stroke ahead of Newberry.
Newberry, which is ranked 16th nationally in the GolfStat head-to-head rankings, enters the regional tournament after a second-place finish at the South Atlantic Conference Championships, just two strokes behind Carson-Newman. Under the direction of SAC Coach of the Year Lauren Ressler McCants, the Wolves are currently on pace to set a school record for lowest team average for the season at 314.8 strokes per round.
The 2011 NCAA Division II women's golf super regional competition will be conducted May 1-3, with the South Regional tournament being held at The Club at Eaglebrooke in Lakeland, Fla.
Newberry is the seventh seed of the nine teams in the South Regional, led by two-time defending national champion Nova Southeastern. The last 11 Division II national champions have come from the South Region, as well as 13 of the 15 individual national champions dating back to 1996. Carson-Newman is the eighth seed.
Each super regional will consist of both team and individual competition conducted concurrently with nine teams and four individuals from non-qualifying teams at each site. All participants will compete throughout the 54 holes of competition. The top three teams along with the top three individuals not with a team from each super regional will advance to the championships.
The 2011 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships will be held May 11-14, at The Meadows in Allendale, Mich.
The championships will consist of both team and individual competition conducted concurrently. All participants will compete throughout the entire 72 holes of competition. In the team competition, the low four scores for each team will count in each day's total score. The number of participants that qualify for the finals is 72.
