The South Atlantic Conference Raises a Conference Single Season Record $20,000 for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference women's basketball member institutions raised a South Atlantic Conference record $20,000 for the Kay Yow Cancer fund this past season. Lenoir-Rhyne raised the most money for the initiative in Division II as it raised $4,045.
"Cancer affects millions of families every year and this year it made its way to Hickory, NC and let our family know just how devastating a disease it really is, said Lenoir-Rhyne head coach Katie Pate. "Witnessing the loss of junior, guard Farrah Young's mother to breast cancer galvanized this team. As a result, raising awareness and funds for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund was a mission this team embraced with their whole hearts. If we can take that competitive spirit off the court into beating cancer, I love our chances in beating this disease! Lenoir-Rhyne University Women's Basketball is honored to sit atop this year's list for championing the South Atlantic Conference's fundraising efforts. Our league members and the leadership within each are a dangerous combination - so let's set out to break even more records next year!"
The South Atlantic Conference joined the initiative in raising money for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund during the 2009-10 season and to date has raised more than $75,000.
"I am very proud of all our women's basketball programs for embracing this worthy cause," said South Atlantic Conference Associate Commissioner and SWA Eliane Kebbe. "Not only are they raising money for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund but they are educating our young women and giving them a cause bigger than basketball."
"I am extremely proud of all of the South Atlantic Conference for its continued efforts in this initiative," said South Atlantic Conference Commissioner Patrick Britz. "As a league, the SAC has raised approximately $75,298 over the past few years, which shows our commitment to the worthy cause of breast cancer research and awareness."
