WINGATE, N.C. -- The host Wingate Bulldogs started the day needing to come back from a three-run deficit in the resumption of a rain-shortened elimination game against Lander in the fifth inning and beat Lenoir-Rhyne twice to move on. Wingate nearly accomplished the feat but the Bears had different plans, winning the regional in extra innings on a Madison Wilson base hit.
Wingate scored four in the sixth to overcome Lander in an elimination game and took down the Bears 4-2 in game one. Down to their final at bat, the Bulldogs trailed by one in the 7th before scratching across a run with two outs. However, the Bears were undeterred and Lora Beth Wood started the eighth inning with a base hit. After an out, Kaylan Brown and Katelyn Rackard each singled to set up Wilson's dramatic walk off. Lauren Rakes pitched all eight innings to earn the win.
The Bears will now move to the Super Regional for the third time in program history and the first since 2011. They will take on a North Georgia team that came back to win two games over Francis Marion today. The games will take place in Dahlonega, Ga. on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.
