Wingate Sweeps Men's and Women's 2023 South Atlantic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships
ANDERSON, S.C. – The Wingate Bulldogs swept both the Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championship titles on Thursday (May 4). The men posted a team score of 221 while the women finished with a final score of 201.5.
On the men's side, Lenoir-Rhyne took second with 133.5 points while Limestone finished third with 110. Carson-Newman claimed fourth with 99 points and Catawba finished fifth with 65. Tusculum took sixth with 57, Anderson finished seventh with 50.5, and Newberry earned eighth with 43. Rounding out the group was Emory & Henry in ninth with 20 points, Lincoln Memorial and Mars Hill tied for 10th with nine points each, and Coker in 12th with one point.
For the women, Lenoir-Rhyne finished second with 152 points, Catawba finished third with 135, and Carson-Newman finished fourth with 74.5. Limestone took fifth with 63 points, while Newberry finished sixth with 51, narrowly ahead of Anderson who finished seventh with 48.5 points. Lincoln Memorial claimed eighth with 27 points, Tusculum finished ninth with 26, and Coker ended the day in 10th with 19 points. Rounding out the group was Mars Hill in 11th with 15.5 points and Emory & Henry in 12th with 2 points.
The Men's Freshman of the Year was awarded to Anderson's Elliot Dotson, while the Women's Freshman of the Year was Lenoir-Rhyne's Alexis Brown. The Men's Track Athlete of the Meet was Carson-Newman's Makanakaishe Charamba and the Men's Field Athlete of the Meet was Limestone's Lloyd McCurdy. The Women's Track Athlete of the Meet ended in a tie between Lenoir-Rhyne's Alexis Brown and Catawba's Raina Andrews. The Women's Field Athlete of the meet was Catawba's MeKayla White. Wingate head coach Matt van Lierop was named both the Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year.
