Wingate's Chahid Named 2024 SAC Men's Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Wingate's Hamza Chahid has been named the 2024 South Atlantic Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced Friday (April 5).
Chahid, a sophomore distance runner from M'Rirt, Morocco, won the 5000-meter title at the 2024 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships this past March. His time of 13:51.02 was good for a new Wingate program record in the event. Chahid also competed in the 3000-meters, finishing fourth with a time of 7:59.03, to cap off the national championships with two All-American performances.
Earlier in the season, Chahid ran 7:47.70 in the 3000-meters at the David Henry Valentine Invitational to become the third-fastest performer in NCAA Division II history. At the same invite, he posted a PR in the mile with a time of 4:01.06. Chahid was recognized three times this season as a SAC WePlayed Sports Men's Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week. At the 2024 South Atlantic Conference Championship, Chahid collected a silver medal in the 5000-meters (14:10.77) and helped Wingate capture their second straight SAC Indoor Track & Field Championship title. For his efforts this season, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) named Chahid the 2024 Men's Southeast Region Track Athlete of the Year.
The SAC Men's Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year award is determined by a vote by the league's head coaches.
