The South Atlantic Conference Announces AstroTurf Men's Soccer Players of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced its AstroTurf Men's Soccer Players of the Week for matches played during the week of Sept. 17 through Sept. 24. Carson-Newman's Tobias Solem Karlsen was named the Offensive Player of the Week, while Newberry's Tarek Malz was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week.
A junior forward from Kongsvinger, Norway, Karlsen collected four goals in the two games, including a hat trick in a 4-1 victory over SAC foe Coker. His three-goal performance was the third of his career, scoring the trio in nearly 27 minutes of game action. Karlsen is credited with the game-winning goals in both of the Eagles' victories, with the other coming in a 3-2 contest at Lincoln Memorial. This gives him three game-winners in 2018 and eight in his time at Carson-Newman, the fourth-most in program history. This is Karlsen's first Offensive Player of the Week honor.
Malz, a native of Satrup, Germany, was instrumental in the 1-0 shutout of Anderson. The junior, playing from the center back position, allowed just seven shots on goal in the Wolves' defensive effort. This is Malz's first Defensive Player of the Week award this season.
