Nine Men’s Soccer Players Named To NSCAA All-Region Team
KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Nine men's soccer players from the South Atlantic Conference have been named to the NSCAA/adidas All-Southeast Region Team, announced the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
The NSCAA All-Region teams are voted on by the head coaches of each of the respective regions in Division II.
Wingate University junior midfielder Luke Mulholland, the SAC Player of the Year, was named to the first team, as was Carson-Newman College forward Omar Cooke.
Carson-Newman College
The Carson-Newman men's soccer team is represented twice on the NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region Team. Senior forward Omar Cooke (Roanoke, Va.) and junior defender Matt Finlay (Liverpool, ENGLAND) were named to the region first and third teams, respectively.

Cooke, a 2009 All-South Atlantic Conference First-Team and Daktronics All-Southeast Region Second-Team honoree, led the team with six assists and four match-winners and was second in goals scored (11) and total points (28). He was also selected to the 2009 Food Lion SAC Tournament All-Tournament team. Cooke completes his career at C-N with 32 goals scored, good for fourth all-time in C-N history and 78 total points which is fifth in school history.
Finlay is also a 2009 All-SAC First-Teamer and was named to the Daktronics All-Southeast Region First Team. He anchored a back line that allowed just 23 goals in 20 matches (1.13/match) and also aided the Eagles offensively with three goals and three assists for nine total points.
The Eagles finished 14-5-1 on the season and won the 2009 South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Title. They reached the NCAA Division II Tournament for the seventh straight year and advanced to the Southeast Region semifinals.
Tusculum College
Tusculum College juniors Sven Meyer and Lucas Paulini garnered NSCAA/adidas All-Southeast Region honors for the second consecutive season, each earning a spot on the Third Team after helping the Pioneer men's soccer team to its second straight Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament title this fall.
Meyer, a native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, garnered All-Southeast Region honors for the second consecutive season, earning a spot on the Third Team after being named to the First Team in 2008. The 5-11, 165-pound defender started each of Tusculum's 18 matches this season, notching an assist and helping the Pioneers hold their opponents to one goal or less in nine contests. Meyer was also named to the Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region Second Team earlier this fall.
Paulini, also from Buenos Aires, Argentina, earned NSCAA/adidas All-Southeast Region honors for the third consecutive season, earning a spot on the Third Team after being named to the Second Team in each of the last two years. The 6-0, 185-pound midfielder tallied three goals and four assists this season to propel the Pioneers to their eighth consecutive winning campaign, moving into the top 10 on the program's all-time assists list with 26 career helpers. The 2007 SAC Freshman of the Year recorded his best performance of the season against Mars Hill on Oct. 7, scoring two goals, including the match-winner, and adding an assist in TC's 4-1 win over the Lions.
Tusculum is expected to return six starters and 14 letter-winners from this year's squad, as well as seven of its top ten scorers from this season's SAC Tournament championship team.
Wingate University
Wingate University junior midfielder Luke Mulholland (Preston, England) and senior forward Junior Nyemb (Douala, Cameroon) have been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Southeast Region teams, NSCAA officials announced this week. Mulholland received first team honors, while Nyemb garnered third team laurels.
Earlier this month, Mulholland was named to the Daktronics NCAA Division II men's soccer All-American first team.
Dave Bailey |
Mulholland was the only student-athlete from the Southeast Region to earn first team laurels. The Daktronics All-American teams are selected by CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The 2009 South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year, Mulholland led the Bulldogs with 17 goals this season. Thirteen of his 17 goals were scored in conference matches. His 0.94 goals per game and 2.06 points per game top the SAC charts. He also led the conference with eight match-winning goals.
Mulholland is a three-time NSCAA regional honoree, as he was selected for the NSCAA All-Appalachian Region first team in 2007 and the NSCAA All-Southeast Region first team in 2008. He will advance to the national All-American ballot.
Nyemb earns NSCAA All-Region first team laurels for the third time in his illustrious career. In 2009, Nyemb was second on the team charts in goals with nine.
In 2008, Nyemb led the team and charted second in the SAC with 16 goals. He had 33 points and six match-winners in 2008.
A four-time All-South Atlantic Conference performer, Nyemb's career statistics include 45 goals, 14 assists and 13 match-winners. A four-year starter, Nyemb was Wingate's scoring leader each of his first three seasons. In the classroom, Nyemb is a three-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III selection.
Wingate earned a berth in the NCAA Division II play-offs this year, advancing to the regional semi-finals with a 13-5-1 overall record. The Bulldogs posted a 6-1-1 ledger in the SAC.
Lincoln Memorial University
Junior defender Lucas Pereira and junior midfielder Aaron McKenna were both named to the NSCAA/adidas All-Southeast Region second team.
Pereira made an immediate impact on the LMU program in his first season by helping the Railsplitters notch seven shutouts this season, including one tie.
Although he played in only 12 of the Railsplitter's 16 matches this season, McKenna, a three-year letter-winner, scored one goal and tallied one assist to help the Railsplitters achieve a 10-5-1 record this season while earning a third place finish in the South Atlantic Conference regular season standings.
Lenoir-Rhyne
Lenoir-Rhyne University's Dave Bailey has been named to the 2009 NSCAA NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region Men's Soccer Second Team. NSCAA is the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Bailey, a junior forward from Bath, ENGLAND, led Lenoir-Rhyne in goals (15) and points (36) in 2009 to go along with two game-winning scores and three hat tricks. In addition, Bailey's 2.25 points per match topped the South Atlantic Conference and is seventh-best in NCAA Division II.
Last month, Bailey earned First-Team All-South Atlantic Conference and Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region honors in leading L-R to an 8-6-4 mark (4-2-2 in league play) in 2009.
