Wingate’s Jacob Ormerod Receives National Player of the Week Honors from USILA/Lids Team Sports
Perry, N.Y.----Wingate University men's lacrosse junior goalie Jacob Ormerod (Lake Mary, Fla.) is the USILA/Lids Team Sports Defensive Player of the Week, officials announced Wednesday. The USILA/Lids Team Sports Players of the Week (offensive and defensive) are revealed each Wednesday for the three NCAA divisions.
"Jacob has been the back bone of our defense all year," Wingate head men's lacrosse coach Michael Lawson says. "He is always poised and serves as a calming influence. Our defense feeds off him…he continues to lead by example."
The reigning AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, Ormerod led the Bulldogs to two SAC victories last week over number 15 Queens 9-8 and Catawba 10-9. In the Wednesday win over Queens, Ormerod posted a career-high 22 saves as the Bulldogs overcame a five-goal first quarter deficit to defeat the 15th-ranked Royals 9-8.
On Saturday, the Seminole High School product posted 21 saves in Wingate's come-from-behind overtime triumph over Catawba. For the week, he allowed only 17 goals with an 8.44 goals against average (GAA). Ormerod's save percentage was 71.7.
The Bulldogs conclude the 2016 regular season with two SAC games. On Saturday, April 16, Wingate visits Brevard for a 1 p.m. league encounter. The Bulldogs will celebrate Senior Day Saturday, April 23 when the Tusculum Pioneers come to town for a 4 p.m. contest.
