SAC Men’s Lacrosse Awards led by Queens’ Chan
Queens forward Garrett Chan has been voted as the SAC Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Year, headlining a group of award winners from the sport’s inaugural season in the conference.
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Queens forward Garrett Chan has been voted as the SAC Men's Lacrosse Player of the Year, headlining a group of award winners from the sport's inaugural season in the conference.
Chan's 35 goals during the regular season were third-most in the SAC, and his 62 shots-on-goal led the league. He scored goals in all but one match this season, helping guide the Royals to a 6-1 SAC record and a share of the conference title.
Joining Chan as All-SAC First Team attackers are Catawba's John Scheich and Mars Hill's Jimmy McBride. McBride is second in the conference with 37 goals and third with 52 points, while Scheich is tied for sixth in points with 43.
Queens' Evan Farkas, Mars Hill's Anthony Malcolm and Lenoir-Rhyne's Sam Ashton form the first-team midfielder unit, and Queens' Tim Cloud is the team's long pole midfielder. Ashton is fourth in the league with 23 assists, Malcolm is tied for sixth with 45 ground balls, Farkas is ninth in goals with 27, and Cloud ranks 10th with 13 caused turnovers.
Making up the All-SAC First Team defense are Queens' Patrick Murphy and Patrick Thomas, and Catawba's Gage Mason. Another pair of Queens players – keeper Eric Dolan and specialist Kenneth Stryker – round out the First Team.
Mason is tied for second in the SAC with 22 caused turnovers, Murphy is fourth with 20 caused turnovers, Stryker's 69 ground balls are second-most in the league, and Thomas' 32 ground balls rank 20th.
Dolan, meanwhile, complete the regular season with the SAC's second-best save percentage at 56.0, and ranked third in goals-against average at 9.34.
Earning All-Conference Second Team honors are Wingate's Austin Murphy, Lenoir-Rhyne's Jay Goldsmith and Queens' Casey Hock at attacker, Coker's Mike Martiello, Mars Hill's Ryan Sage, Wingate's Cory Schumacher and Lenoir-Rhyne's Imari Davis at midfielder, Catawba's Heartland Jones at long pole midfielder, Mars Hill's Zach Gregg and Tusculum's Mitch Chapman at defender, Wingate's Bryce Sneed at specialist and Mars Hill's Patrick McMahon at goalkeeper.
In addition to his All-SAC accolades, Austin Murphy was also selected as the conference's Freshman of the Year after leading the league with 60 total points.
Completing the All-Conference Team as honorable-mention selection are attackers Andy Campos of Coker, Ryan Maurer of Coker and Adam Zulak of Mars Hill, midfielders Tyler Kotch of Lenoir-Rhyne and Chase Watts of Wingate, defenders Dylan Marks of Coker, Shea Fadel of Catawba and Drew Thompson of Wingate, Catawba specialist Daniel Rew and Lenoir-Rhyne keeper Alex Squires.
After their teams split the SAC regular-season championship, Queens' Jim Fritz and Lenoir-Rhyne's Greg Paradine were chosen as the conference's co-Coaches of the Year.
