Carson-Newman Leads at 2017 SAC Men's Golf Championship; 1st Round Play Suspended Due to Darkness
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Rain was the story of the opening day of the 2017 South Atlantic Conference Men's Golf Championships which is being held at the 6,685-yard, par-71 Country Club of Salisbury. Despite the weather, all but four of the 20 pairings were able to finish play in the first round. The completion of the first round is set for Monday morning with round two following.
A steady rain began to fall in the late morning hours and play was eventually suspended for about three hours just after noon before resuming at 3:20 pm.
Among the holes that were finished, Carson-Newman holds a four-shot lead over Newberry and Queens. Queens finished its first round and its 288 total is the best score of the teams that completed the full round.
Individually, eight golfers currently stand under par. Cameron Duggar, of Tusculum, and Gilberto Pena, of Queens, are tied at two-under-par. Carson-Newman's Jake Headrick and Newberry's Carlos Leandro are among the six players that are one shot back and both still have three holes to play in their opening round.
