LMU, Wingate Advance in NCAA Men's Basketball Regional
Lincoln Memorial outlasted UNC Pembroke and Wingate held on against Limestone on Saturday, moving both teams into the semifinal round of the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship Southeast Regional. Click here for recaps of both games.
No. 2 Lincoln Memorial 82, No. 7 UNC Pembroke 80
AIKEN, S.C. - Fueled by a game-winning jumper by Lorenza Ross with four seconds remaining, the 13th-ranked and second-seeded Railsplitters advanced past the seventh-seeded University of North Carolina at Pembroke, 82-80, in the quarterfinal round of the 2013 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Saturday afternoon in Aiken, South Carolina. With the win, Lincoln Memorial University (25-5) will advance to the semifinals of the Southeast Regional, where they are set to square off against three-seeded Barton College on Sunday at 5 p.m.
The game saw 10 ties and nine lead changes in all, and was not decided until the final seconds, as Lorenza Ross hit a runner from the left side of the floor with only four seconds remaining to clinch the victory for Lincoln Memorial.
The Railsplitters faced a 39-37 deficit at the half but, Lorenza Ross and Cam Carden sparked the second-half comeback by combining for 26 points in the final 20 minutes of play. Ross (Savannah, GA) scored 16 points in the second half on 8-for-10 shooting, while Cam Carden(Clearwater, FL) added 10 in the frame with three 3-pointers and a free throw.
The final six minutes of the game were played within four points and the score was tied three times down the stretch. The final tie came at the 1:27 mark, as Brandon Winford drained one of his two free throw attempts for the Braves to knot the game at 80-80. After the Railsplitters and Braves traded missed three-pointers, Lorenza Ross broke the stalemate with a jumper with only four ticks remaining. UNC Pembroke found themselves with a game-tying attempt, however, All-Peach Belt Conference Second Team selection Shamel Brackett's jumper went begging, as LMU advanced with a 82-80 win over the Braves.
Brackett poured in 18 points in the second half for the Braves to keep the game close. Brackett was 6-for-12 from the floor in the second half with four treys.
The Braves largest lead was seven points with 4:48 left in the half following two made free throw by Brackett, while the largest lead of the first half for the Railsplitters was two points at 13:15 remaining.
2013 Daktronics Second-Team All-Region selection George Blakeney led the Braves in the first half with 10 points and six rebounds.South Atlantic Conference Second-Team member Jake Troyli led the way for the Railsplitters scoring 12 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting from the field in the first half.
The Railsplitters were led to victory by the four-headed attack of Lorenza Ross, Jake Troyli, Cam Carden and Vincent Bailey, as those four combined for 57 of the team's 82 points. In addition to his 16 second-half points, Ross added four in the first half to tally a team-leading 20 points to go along with four rebounds and an assist in 36 minutes of action. Carden netted 13 points for the game behind three three-pointers, while Jake Troyli (Largo, FL) finished with 14 points on five-of-seven shooting from the floor. Bailey (Jennings, FL) notched 10 points and a team-high five rebounds, pacing the Railsplitters to a 27-23 margin of victory on the glass. Coming into today's match, UNC Pembroke ranked third in the country in rebounding margin, while the Railsplitters ranked ninth.
Brackett led the Braves with a game-high 27 points. George Blakeney was the only other Brave in double-figures with 14 points. Blakeney secured a double-double by adding a game-high 10 boards and two blocks.
The game was played well with only 20 total turnovers and both teams shooting over 50 percent for the game. The Railsplitters turned the ball over 11 times and the Braves turned it over nine times.
Lincoln Memorial finished the game shooting 60 percent (33-for-55). They hit 45.5 percent (5-for-11) from behind the arc and 84.6 percent (11-for-13) from the line.
UNC Pembroke shot 50.9 percent (27-53) from the field and 50 percent (8-for-16) from three-point range. They shot 81.8 percent (18-for-22) on free throws.
The Railsplitters head into the semifinals of the Southeast Regional for the second-consecutive season with the win. On Sunday afternoon, Lincoln Memorial will look to advance to the Southeast Regional Final, as they are set to square off with three-seeded Barton. That game is slated to tip at 5 p.m. in Aiken, South Carolina.
No. 4 Wingate 65, No. 5 Limestone 60
AIKEN, S.C. - The 25th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs had four players in double figures Saturday night, winning 65-60 over fifth seeded Limestone College in the opening round of the 2013 NCAA Southeast Regionals. The Bulldogs improve to 22-8 overall, while Limestone ends its season at 21-9.
Wingate has now won five straight games and 10 of its last 12 overall. The two-time defending SAC Tournament champions will face top-seeded and tournament host USC Aiken in the regional semifinals Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. The Bulldogs knocked off second-seeded USC Aiken in the opening round of the 2012 NCAA Southeast Regionals.
"We knew our team was 0-4 against Limestone coming in," head coach Brian Good says. "I was proud of our effort, especially defensively in the second half."
Senior forward Odell Turner had 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Wingate attack. Sophomore guard Ryan Daye added 14 points on seven-of-12 shooting. Senior guard Eddie Lewis had 11 points, while junior center Deion Turman contributed 10 points, six rebounds and four blocks for the Bulldogs.
Charles Blue had 17 points and seven rebounds to lead the Limestone attack. PJ Foster added 14 points, while Phillip Moultrie had 10 points and six boards for the Saints.
Threes from Foster and Blue gave Limestone a 21-10 lead eight minutes into the contest. Buckets from Turner and Daye cut the lead to seven, but Foster drained another three to make it a 10-point game with nine minutes remaining. Trailing by nine with 4:21 left in the half, the 'Dogs closed the first half on an 11-5 run. Lewis and senior guard Paidrick Matilus started the flurry with buckets, while Lewis made it a three-point game with a triple. A Turner layup at the buzzer got Wingate to within one at halftime.
Daye knocked down a jumper to give the Bulldogs the lead a minute into the second half. Limestone responded with a 5-0 run, taking a four-point lead on a Moultrie layup with 17:34 remaining. A three-point play from Blue at the 13:41 mark gave the Saints a 45-40 lead. The Bulldogs had the answer, getting three-point plays from Turman and Matilus to take a one-point lead 35 seconds later.
Limestone regained a three-point advantage on a layup from Avery Bomar with 8:54 remaining. Wingate countered with an 8-0 run to take a five-point lead. Turner and Lewis started the flurry with layups, while Turman capped it with back-to-back layups to make it 58-53 with 6:19 to go. The Saints would score the next seven points to take a two-point lead on Foster's triple with 2:22 remaining.
Senior guard Ethan Kincaid knocked down a runner in the paint to tie it at 60 with two minutes to go. Matilus came up with a steal on the other end, knocking down a free throw to put Wingate back on top. Limestone missed a pair of shots on its next possession, with Turman grabbing the rebound with 22 seconds remaining. Kincaid knocked down a pair of free throws to make it a three-point game. The Saints missed another three and Turner grabbed the rebound, knocking down two free throws to seal it for the Bulldogs.
Wingate shot 50 percent from the field, hitting two-of-10 shots from three-point range (20 percent). The Bulldogs held Limestone to 38 percent shooting, while the Saints went 10-for-22 from beyond the arc (45 percent). Limestone out-rebounded Wingate 35-30 on the night. The Bulldogs converted 14 Limestone turnovers into 18 points. The 'Dogs also had an 11-4 edge in second-chance points.
Wingate and USC Aiken will meet in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year Sunday at 7:30 p.m. "I'm sure we have their attention after last year," Good says. "We are going to have to be ready to go. We got better as the game went along tonight, so hopefully you will see two teams ready to play on Sunday."
