Hi Chuck...I think you might get different responses from some, but I would like 10 football-playing members (whether they are full or associate), but the scheduling agreements have served us well and I think will continue to do so.

Are you happy with scheduling aliances and associate members or would it be ideal to have 10 full SAC member sponsoring football?

11:37
SAC Commish:
Great question CN99...I like 10 for football and 12-14 for all other sports. 10 for football gives everyone 9 conference games and allows for 2 nonconference opportunities. 12-14 for the other sports seems to work and if we ever get to 14 would have to go divisional play in sports like basketball, volleyball, etc.

CoachClifton_MHU:
The benefit is that late in the year, we get an off week that allows us to rest and get the kids to recoup. The downfall is that sometimes you're one game short, which can hurt getting into the playoffs, which happened to us in 2015. We were 6-2 in division play and did not make the playoffs.

Being a two-time All-American, Josh provides great leadership and experience to our defensive unit. His ability to cover the top receivers or give strong run support is a big advantage to us defensively.

CoachIerulli_LC:
I believe what we are doing offensively and defensively will help us achieve our goals. Offensively, we will be using a tight end as part of our offensive scheme - previously, our offense was a four-wide formation. Defensively, I've always been a 4-3 defensive coach, and I believe the schemes that has been a part of my coaching background will fit well with our defensive personnel.

That guy was such a special friend to me and this football program. He was a three-sport letter winner at Furman. He wouldn't tell this story, but he caught two games of a baseball doubleheader, a tennis match and then played in the football spring game. He's a great example to all of us who are married and have a family because of what he did for his wife in her final days. He meant quite a bit to Carson-Newman athletics. All the kids that are returning are key players. The kids that we recruited, we recruited kids to come play. We want them to compete. We never talked to anyone about being redshirted. Competition makes for better football players. That's why our returners are key. They're battle tested and know how to play together and handle adversity, adversity that we brought upon ourselves. I was proud of our kids at the end of last year about how they learned to handle that.

Can we develop a finish mentality. Can we win close games in the fourth quarter and learning how to win and make plays when you just have to. In this league, there's a lot of good teams and not a lot of separation between the teams so it will be the ability to win close games. It's a young football team with just three seniors so can young guys grow up quickly and improve depth. We are going to have to be a team that gets better every week.

They are tremendous. Everything about our leadership here from our President to Athletic Director has been about making us successful. I think people understand this is a process and people have high expectations but that's what I want. No one has a higher expectation than me and we want to make this community proud of our program.

Coming out of spring, I felt like our defense was ahead of our offense. The first group was more experienced and a little older. I expect us to play good defense and Coach Aldridge has done a good job guiding them. There's going to be some young guys on the two deep. I expect us to play good solid defense. We're a little thin so we need to establish depth.

Warren is a guy who we were very excited to sign. He played a lot of QB at Scotland and will play running back for us. He's a bigger back and had a good summer with his weight room and conditioning stuff. It's always hard to project how a freshman is going to do but he's a kid we are going to take a really strong look at to see if he can help us this fall.

CoachCronic_LR:
We will be a little different. There's going to be some elements of some wings and motion so it'll be a little different than has been in this league before. We want to be able to run the football and be efficient in the pass game. We want to have a physical style and get to the point where we can wear people down and use some tempo. You have to have an identity and we feel like we have one and our kids have bought into that. There's kids here that fit into what we want to do.

CoachCronic_LR:
First of all, our main job is to rebuild championship culture. A high percentage of our time has been spent on doing things right everyday. Our guys have done a great job buying into that. They have been held accountable academically and on the practice field and we are happy with their work. Our first victory was getting a 3.05 team GPA. About half of our guys are brand new and some of those guys will help us. I like the progress we've made but we have to keep working to make this team the best it can be.

Joe Blue returns for his senior season. In my opinion, he's one of, if not the best, inside linebacker in the league. Jamarcus Henderson at defensive end is pound-for-pound as good of a pass rusher as you'll see in this league. If he was 6'4" he'd probably be at Clemson, but he's 5'4" so he's at Newberry!

I think we've also got a great combination of power and speed at the running back spot. We've got two big kids in Austin Barnes and Trez Cook, and then we've got a lot of speed with guys like Voshon St. Hill and Chance Walker.

Who do you think will be your key players this year?

At that particular time, we were the hunted instead of the hunter, and we had never been in that position before. I don't think we responded very well to it. So I'm looking forward to going back to where we've had our success: as the underdog, proving people wrong

I think winning without a legitimate quarterback is a rarity and it's not something we'd like to carry into this season. I think Greg Ruff has shown that he CAN be our starting quarterback, but I think we also have several kids that are talented enough to help us at that spot.

CoachKnight_Nby:
Right now going into practice we've got Greg Ruff penciled in. He had a great spring and didn't throw a pick last year. We've also been really pleased with Dre Harris. He's a guy we put on the shelf and redshirted but we think he's a really talented kid.

I do think we will be better as long as we stay healthy. We have four guys in the OL that started for us back. 2 viable QB's. 3 RB's I like. WR we will be young but we have a grad transfer from Jacksonville in Brian Burnett and a Juco guy Kefa Cort that we really like. I expect to make a jump there.

Your offense made strides last year but still struggled against the tougher defenses in the league. You have a lot of key players coming back on that side. Do expect a more consistently powerful offense this year?

I think Linebackers will be a strength you have 2 guys in Ivan Hogans and Chris Matheus that have played a lot of football around here. I love Jackson Cauthan also he is going to be really good.

From top to bottom, No. There are no bad teams in the league. Anybody can finish from 1-8. Being around the other coaches at the clinic I can tell you that I have respect for all the other coaches and programs in the league. There's not a team that doesn't have enough talent to go a long way this year.

I can't speak for other teams, I think we just ran into a buzzsaw last year with West Florida, making it to the title game. We have a lot of talent in the SAC and I believe whoever wins the league will have a shot at going deep into the play-offs.

Shaw Crocker came out of the spring as the #1 guy. He's made great strides running the offense. We're able to open up a little more of the playbook to him because of his talents. Jake Satterfield came out of spring as a close 2nd. Jake has a great arm and tremendous talent. Either one of those guys can play for us. They have a great command of the playbook despite being younger and they've shown to have great leadership capability. Excited about the future at that position.

The offensive staff is certainly looking at that. When you lose guys like Hayes and Pittman you have to find ways to produce offense. We're looking at all the different ways. Excited about Dom and other guys in the backfield, but need to figure out different ways to get the ball in our playmakers hands and produce yards and points.

That's a great observation. We will certainly be relying on that group as we break in a bunch of new faces at other spots. Last year we ran the ball 65 percent of the time, I imagine we will be a little more balanced this year.

Joe Reich:
Very excited about Nate Poole coaching our receivers. He brings a lot of great experience to that position. You're correct, our WR group is deep and talented with the obvious guy being BJ Muckelvene as the most recognizable guy, but then we have Bryan Mitchell, JT Stokes, Malik Bledsoe, Adam Riley and some very talented freshmen coming in as well.

Very deep at safety with Joe Kelly coming back as a senior captain. Cam Mattison comes back off an injury. Davion Washington, Kam Johnson and others come back, so very talented there. At corner, Matt White returns at one corner spot and we have some other guys with experience. We also have a few really good freshmen coming in that we'll rely on to play some minutes.

Dom McNeill comes back after missing most of last year with injury. He is very dynamic. After a great freshman season a couple years ago, looking forward to seeing him healthy this year.
