The South Atlantic Conference Announces AstroTurf Football Players of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced its AstroTurf Football Players of the Week for games played Nov. 5 through Nov. 11. Lenoir-Rhyne running back Caine Crews was named Offensive Player of the Week, while Wingate defensive back Cameron Mattison was named the Defensive Player of the Week, and Mars Hill kicker Tanner Fox was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
Crews, a freshman out of Brunswick, Ga., ran for a career-high 129 yards on just 12 carries in the Bears 63-21 win over Catawba. He had a long run of 51 yards and an average of 10.8 yards per carry en route to the first 100-yard game of his career. Behind Crews running game, Lenoir-Rhyne secured a perfect 7-0 record in SAC play to win the 2018 SAC Football Championship. This is Crews's first Player of the Week honor this season.
Mattison, a senior from Charlotte, N.C., led the Bulldogs to a 16-12 win over Tusculum last week. Thanks to Mattison's 44-yard pick-six late in the second quarter, the Bulldogs were able to secure their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II Football Championship. In addition to his interception, Mattison added six total tackles and a tackle for loss. This is Mattison's first Defensive Player of the Week accolade this season.
Fox, a sophomore from Canton, N.C., was instrumental in Mar Hill's 21-17 win over Newberry last week. He had nine punts for 326 yards, including a long of 48 yards, with three punts inside the Wolves' 20-yard line. He also went 3-for-3 on PAT kicks, scoring three points for the Lions. This is Fox's first Player of the Week award of the season.
