NCBWA Announces All-Region Award Winners, Newberry's Marine and Triplett along with Wingate's Farris Win Major Awards
Wingate, N.C.----The 2023 All-Southeast Region Teams from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) has been announced. The 34 honorees represent 17 different teams in the region, with defending national champion North Greenville leading the way seven five All-Region honorees, including five first team selections. Erskine has four All-Region players, with all four earning first team honors. Newberry and Young Harris have three All-Region selections apiece. In total, eight different teams have multiple All-Region honorees.
Newberry redshirt senior Braylin Marine has been named the NCBWA Southeast Region Player of the Year for the second straight year. The SAC Player of the Year is hitting .420 with 15 doubles, four triples, five homers, 67 RBI and 70 runs scored, piling up 70 runs while stealing 39 bases in 46 attempts.
Wingate redshirt junior left-hander Mitch Farris is the Region Pitcher of the Year. The SAC Pitcher of the Year is 11-1 on the season with a 1.21 ERA and 127 strikeouts against just 16 walks in 89 innings of work, posting a WHIP of 0.62 while holding opponents to a .128 average.
Newberry's Russell Triplett is the Region Coach of the Year. The SAC Coach of the Year led the Wolves to the SAC regular season and tournament titles in 2023. Newberry is 41-13 overall after going 19-4 in league play. The Wolves are the number two seed in the NCAA Southeast Regionals, earning hosting duties.
North Greenville's John Michael Faile is the first team All-Region catcher. He is hitting .338 for the top-ranked Crusaders with 10 doubles, 14 homers, 67 RBI and 48 runs scored. Erskine's Dale Francis is the first team All-Region first baseman. He is hitting .442 on the season with 14 homers and 10 doubles, driving in 51 runs while scoring 47 times. Erskine's Ashby Smith is the second team honoree. He is hitting .398 with 11 homers, 24 doubles and 63 RBI, scoring 36 runs on the year. Wingate's Seaver King is the third team All-Region honoree. He is hitting .411 with 20 doubles, 11 homers and five triples, driving in 53 runs while scoring 63 times, adding 13 stolen bases. Marine rounds out the infield as the first team All-Region shortstop.
North Greenville's Marek Chlup leads the way as a first team All-Region outfielder, hitting .375 with 13 homers, 14 doubles, two triples and 44 RBI, scoring 48 times while stealing 20 bases in 20 attempts. Lenoir-Rhyne's Blake Bean is also a first team outfielder. He is hitting .358 with 17 doubles and 17 homers, driving in 54 runs while scoring 61 times, adding 12 stolen bases. North Greenville's Pat Monteith is another first team selection, hitting .358 with 17 homers, 11 doubles and 46 RBI, scoring 76 runs while adding 17 stolen bases. Columbus State's Derek Wylie rounds out the first team outfielders. He is hitting .333 with 19 homers and eight doubles, driving in 63 runs while scoring 57 times.
Farris leads the way as the first team All-Region starting pitchers, followed by Barton's Tanner Holvorson. Halvorson, the Conference Carolinas Pitcher of the Year, is 11-2 with a 1.71 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 95 innings of work, piling up 10 complete games. Georgia Southwestern's Nick McCollum is another first team All-Region starting pitcher. The PBC Pitcher of the Year is 9-2 with a 2.80 ERA, striking out 109 in 106 innings of work with just 19 walks, notching four complete games. North Greenville's Reece Fields rounds out the first team All-Region starting pitchers. He is 12-2 with a 3.62 ERA, striking out 85 in 79 innings of work.
USC Aiken's Dylan Wilhelm leads the way as the first team All-Region relievers. He has a 0.00 ERA in 19 1/3 innings of work, going 3-2 on the season while piling up nine saves. Wilhelm has 21 strikeouts on the year, allowing just four hits. Erskine's Johnny Hummel is also a first team All-Region reliever. He has compiled a 1.35 ERA in 33 1/3 innings of work, going 3-2 while collecting seven saves. He has 62 strikeouts on the season, giving up just 14 hits.
Erskine's Christian Rivera is the first team All-Region designated hitter. He is hitting .348 with 16 homers and 12 doubles, driving in 51 runs while scoring 55 times. North Greenville's David Lewis is the first team All-Region Utility player. He is hitting .347 with 14 doubles and 14 homers, driving in 52 runs while scoring 46 runs.
Belmont Abbey's Garrett Browder is the second team All-Region catcher. He is hitting .370 with 12 doubles, 11 homers and 53 RBI, scoring 49 runs. Young Harris's Jeremy Begora is the second team first baseman, hitting .361 with 14 homers and nine doubles, driving in 62 runs while scoring 58 times. Ethan Underwood of Young Harris is the second team second baseman, hitting .328 with 14 doubles and six homers, driving in 38 runs while scoring 59 times, adding 18 stolen bases. Tusculum's Christian Ortega is the second team All-Region second baseman, hitting .385 with 20 doubles and eight homers, driving in 44 runs while scoring 46 times. North Greenville's Jalen Vasquez is the second team All-Region shortstop, hitting .354 with 12 doubles, eight homers and 32 RBI, scoring 42 runs.
Newberry's Donovan Ford leads the way as a second team All-Region outfielder. He is hitting .413 with 14 doubles, three triples, four homers, 36 RBI and 82 runs, stealing 46 bases in 52 attempts. UNC Pembroke's Christian Jayne is a second team outfielder, hitting .383 with 22 doubles, two triples and five homers, driving in 53 runs while scoring 72 runs, piling up 40 stolen bases in 43 attempts. Emory & Henry's Wayne Mize is a second team honoree, hitting .389 with 11 homers and 17 doubles, driving in 44 runs while scoring 42 times. Mount Olive's Dylan Jeffries rounds out the second team All-Region outfielders. He is hitting .342 with 10 homers, 15 doubles and 41 RBI, scoring 63 runs while stealing 18 bases.
Georgia Southwestern's Rijnaldo Euson leads the way as a second team All-Region starting pitcher. He is 9-1 with a 3.00 ERA on the year, striking out 117 in 90 innings of work. King's Drew Moore is a second team selection. He has compiled a 2.05 ERA, picking up four wins while striking out 43 in 70 innings of work, tossing six complete games. Newberry's Bennett Roemer is another second team honoree. He is 8-0 with a 3.03 ERA on the year, striking out 69 in 71 innings of work. Nate Lamb of Young Harris rounds out the All-Region starting pitchers. He is 8-1 with a 3.53 ERA, striking out 90 in 89 innings of work.
North Greenville's Michael Rodriguez leads the way as a second team All-Region reliever. He is 3-0 on the season with five saves, compiling a 1.82 ERA. Rodriguez has struck out 56 in 29 2/3 innings of work, giving up just 19 hits. Emmanuel's Tyler Mayfield rounds out the All-Region relievers. He is 1-1 with eight saves on the season, compiling a 1.48 ERA. Mayfield has struck out 33 in 24 innings of work.
Lenoir-Rhyne's Sal Carricato is the second team All-Region second baseman. He is hitting .369 with 11 homers, 14 doubles, 41 RBI and 32 runs scored. Mount Olive's Jack Casbarro is the second team All-Region Utility player. He is hitting .318 with 16 doubles, two triples and six homers, driving in 43 runs while scoring 68 times, adding 30 stolen bases in 34 attempts.
