SAC Lands Four on Capital One Academic All-District Baseball Team
Four student-athletes from the SAC have been selected to the 2013 Academic All-District 3 Baseball Team, it was announced on Thursday. Players receiving Academic All-District honors must have legitimate athletic credentials, possess at least a 3.30 GPA and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing.
MACLEAN, Va. – Four student-athletes from the SAC have been selected to the 2013 Academic All-District 3 Baseball Team, it was announced on Thursday. Players receiving Academic All-District honors must have legitimate athletic credentials, possess at least a 3.30 GPA and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing.
Earning spots on the team from the SAC were Tusculum pitcher Taylor Rakes, Newberry catcher Chas Goodwin, Newberry infielder Andy Vogel and Catawba infielder Julio Zubillaga.
Rakes, who was named the SAC Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year last month, is currently in graduate school and finished his undergraduate career with a 3.87 GPA in economics and international business. Goodwin, meanwhile, has a 3.95 GPA majoring in chemistry and biology, Vogel carries a 3.93 GPA in business administration, and Zubillaga has a 3.79 GPA studying business.
Zubillaga was an All-SAC First Team selection at second base, while Rakes made the Second Team as a starting pitcher. Rakes tied for third in the conference with seven wins and ranked third with 84 strikeouts, and Zubillaga hit .328 with 13 doubles and 39 RBI.
Both players were also members of the SAC Gold Glove Team.
Goodwin hit .283 in 39 games this season for the Wolves, while Vogel hit .248 in 35 games.
With their All-District selections, the four players are now eligible to be selected to the Capital One Academic All-America Team.
