Lenoir-Rhyne's Moffat and Queens' Conn Named 2020 South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year for Men's and Women's Lacrosse
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Lenoir-Rhyne's Myles Moffat was voted the 2020 South Atlantic Conference Men's Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Allison Conn from Queens earned the women's honor, the Conference office announced today.
The South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is presented annually to one student-athlete in each of the Conference's championship sports, and is voted on by the SAC's Faculty Athletic Representatives Committee. The winners are selected based on their achievements in academics, athletics, service, and leadership.
Moffat, a junior from Airdrie, Alberta, Canada, finished the 2019-20 academic year with a 3.9013 GPA as a management and marketing major. He is a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society and a two-time Lenoir-Rhyne President's List honoree.
"I am so proud of Myles and he is certainly deserving of this award as he epitomizes being both a scholar and an athlete," said Lenoir-Rhyne head men's lacrosse coach Greg Paradine. "As a coach, we never want to see one of our student-athletes experience a severe injury but when it does happen, Myles should be the example of how it's handled. Never allowing the injury to be a 'crutch', he continued to excel academically while attacking his rehab so that he could get back to being the player that won the 2017 SAC Freshman of the year. The 2020 season was no different for Myles. On the field he proved once again that he was one of the most dynamic players in the country while maintaining his academic prowess. Coaching Myles has been a privilege and I look forward to his continued success."
The 2018 SAC Men's Lacrosse Freshman of the Year, Moffat was sidelined during the 2019 season due to an injury, but bounced back with a solid 2020 season. He played in all seven of the Bears' games in 2020 scoring 23 goals with nine assists for 32 points. He earned Inside Lacrosse Division II Third Team All-American honors and was voted as the Lenoir-Rhyne Comeback Athlete of the Year.
Moffat is also an active member of the Lenoir-Rhyne and Hickory communities serving as a member of the Bears Leadership Academy, volunteering at the Catawba County Humane Society, and participating in 828 Day, which is an initiative to get the Hickory community involved with Lenoir-Rhyne Athletics. Moffatt also participates in Model UN and took part in the Hickory Christmas Parade.
Conn, a senior from Moriches, N.Y., holds a perfect 4.00 GPA as a finance major and was the 2019 SAC Women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The midfielder was the recipient of the 2019 SAC Elite 20 Award, and was also awarded the 2019 NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse Elite 90 Award. She has been a member of the Queens University of Charlotte Royal Athletic Society, has also been on the Dean's List and on the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll, while also being a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honor Society.
"Ally is an incredible role model for our players," said Queens head women's lacrosse coach Clare Short. "She has worked very hard in the classroom all four years of her college career. Receiving a cumulative 4.0 GPA at the end of graduation is such a great accomplishment. We are very proud of her and thrilled that she is receiving this award yet again. Ally will be very successful in her work career and we can't wait to see what she achieves."
The two-time team captain helped lead the Royals to a No. 1 national ranking for the first time in program history in 2020. She started all five games for Queens, totaling 10 points on nine goals and an assist.
Off the field, Conn has volunteered as a coach at William Floyd summer lacrosse camps for two years, and she has volunteered at Charlotte Hornets games working the concessions stand as a fundraiser for the Queens women's lacrosse program. She helped set up at the Light the Night event and participated in the St. Jude Up Till Dawn event, raising money on campus and hosted a bake sale to fundraiser additional monies. She is also a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success.
