The South Atlantic Conference and AstroTurf Present Senior Spotlights Featuring Newberry Lacrosse, Softball and Golf
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – In light of the recent events of the COVID-19 pandemic that canceled the remainder of the 2020 South Atlantic Conference spring sports seasons, the SAC along with its corporate partner AstroTurf, will be presenting the SAC AstroTurf Senior Spotlights. These highlights will showcase the spring sports teams at each of our 12 institutions and will give fans a brief overview of the team's shortened season, while highlighting the 2020 senior student-athletes on each team.
We continue our AstroTurf Senior Spotlights with the Newberry College Wolves and the men's and women's lacrosse, softball, and men's and women's golf teams.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
The Newberry women's lacrosse team finished 2020 with a 4-5 record, and in eight fewer games had already surpassed their 2019 win total. The Wolves picked up wins over Chowan, Lees-McRae, Erskine, and in their final match, they dominated Emmanuel 22-9. The team finished second in the conference in ground balls per game and scoring defense.
Individually, Chloe Wood led the SAC in goals and points while finishing sixth in assists. Marissa Plumer finished second in draw controls per game and fourth in caused turnovers. In goal, Casey McCabe finished fifth in the conference in saves and fourth in minutes played.
Senior defender Michelle Doby finished out the year playing in six games, while starting three of them. She picked up seven ground balls and caused two turnovers.
Senior attack Kylee Kanealey played in seven games, starting six of those with three goals and three assists for six points. Two of her three goals came off free possession shots and she picked up eight ground balls, while causing a turnover.

MEN'S LACROSSE
The Newberry men's lacrosse team finished the 2020 season with a 3-3 overall record. The Wolves opened up the season with an 11-9 win over Chowan. The also picked up victories over Emmanuel and Davis & Elkins. As a team, Newberry led the SAC in man-down defense and shot percentage.
Individually Scott Reed finished third in the conference in assists per game, and fourth in points per game and shot percentage. Kyle Dunklee and Zachary Sunderland each finished fourth in man-up goals. In goal, Jahn Kinner-Ligon finished fourth in saves.
The Wolves were led by 11 seniors: Kenny Barnes, Brad Chambliss, Cameron Clingan, Colton Clingan, Dunklee, Justin Messersmith, Cam Miles, Zach Payne, Kinner-Ligon, Neil Swingruber, and Justin Walsh.
Barnes played in one game in 2020 registering a ground ball.
Chambliss saw action in six games during 2020, scooping up 10 ground balls with three caused turnovers.
Cameron Clingan, a defender, was sidelined during the 2020 season.
Colton Clingan played in three games in goal for the Wolves, logging just over 28 minutes where he allowed just six goals with six saves.
Messersmith played in all six games, scoring nine goals with four assists for 13 points. He scooped up 32 ground balls and had two caused turnovers.
Miles played in one game this season, scoring two goals with two ground balls versus Davis & Elkins.
Payne played in four games with two ground balls and a caused turnover.
Swingruber scored six goals with five assists for 11 points in six games. He scored the game-winner versus Chowan to start the season and picked up eight ground balls with three caused turnovers.
Walsh played in two games in 2020 with four ground balls.

SOFTBALL
Newberry softball finished 2020 with a 20-4 overall record and 3-1 in SAC play. The Wolves opened up the season with a sweep of Tampa and UNC-Pembroke. As a team, Newberry led the conference stolen bases, shutouts, and double plays and tied for the most wins. The team finished the year seventh in the country in total runs and 11th in scoring and shutouts.
On the offensive side, senior Haley Simonds led the SAC in RBIs, finished second in on-base percentage, and eighth in slugging percentage. She also broke the school and conference record for career RBI's this spring with her 200th RBI in the final series of the season. McKenzie Barneycastle finished the year leading the conference with a .486 batting average.
Inside the circle, senior Selice Daley led the conference in wins, complete games, and shutouts, and third in games started and innings pitched.

WOMEN'S GOLF
The Newberry women's golf team finished their 2019-20 season with four top-ten finishes out of seven tournaments they played.
The team's best finish came at the Converse Spring Invite, where they would place second with a score of 656, just one shot out of first. Hanne Sofie Borgen and Jordan Guyton would finish fourth and seventh respectively to lead the Wolves. Borgen would finish the year with three top-ten finishes and two top-five finishes to lead the team.
Senior Johana Lunackova played in 14 rounds in 2020 with an 84.64 stroke average.

MEN'S GOLF
The Newberry men's golf team finished their 2019-20 season with four top-ten finishes out of six tournaments they played.
The team's best finish came at the 2019 State Farm Intercollegiate in October, where they finished second behind Lincoln Memorial with a three-round score of 853. Corey Chrzanowski, Felipe Garces, and Adrian Villiger each shot 213 to finish in a tie for fourth. Villiger finished the year with two top-ten finishes and one top-five finish, while Chrzanowski and Garces each had one top-10 and top-five finish.
Senior Rob Cull played in eight rounds in 2019-20 and finished the year with a 79.13 stroke average.
