Three SAC Teams Earn Bids to NCAA Softball Championship
Lenoir-Rhyne, Anderson and Wingate have been selected to the 2013 NCAA Division II Softball Championship, the association announced on Monday. Lenoir-Rhyne is the No. 2 seed in the Southeast Region, followed by No. 6 Anderson and No. 8 Wingate.
INDIANAPOLIS – Lenoir-Rhyne, Anderson and Wingate have been selected to the 2013 NCAA Division II Softball Championship, the association announced on Monday. Lenoir-Rhyne is the No. 2 seed in the Southeast Region, followed by No. 6 Anderson and No. 8 Wingate.
Lenoir-Rhyne will host the bottom half of the Southeast Region bracket and will play seventh-seeded Georgia College in the first round. Anderson, meanwhile, will face North Georgia in the first round at Lenoir-Rhyne, while Wingate will play at top-seeded Armstrong.
The double-elimination regional round will take place May 10-12. Winners of the regionals will advance to the super regionals on May 17-18, and the finals will be held May 23-27 in Salem, Va.
Lenoir-Rhyne - which earned an automatic bid by winning the Food Lion SAC Softball Championship – will be making its eighth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Bears are 35-14 overall and went 11-7 in the SAC this season.
L-R's first-round opponent, Georgia College, is 36-15 overall and finished 16-6 in the Peach Belt.
Anderson earns its first selection to the NCAA Tournament as a member of the SAC after finishing as the runners-up in the conference's regular-season standings at 12-6. The Trojans are 37-13 overall, and will face 36-12 North Georgia out of the Peach Belt in their opener.
Wingate is back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009 after going 32-20-1 overall and 9-9 in the SAC. The tournament appearance will be the Bulldogs' fourth in program history.
Awaiting WU in the first round is Armstrong, which is 36-7-1 overall and won the PBC at 18-4.
