Lions fall to Catawba in extras in SAC Baseball Championships
The Mars Hill baseball team (18-30) was defeated by Catawba (29-22) by a score of 7-6 in 10 innings Thursday afternoon to kickoff the 2022 South Atlantic Conference Baseball Championships.
KODAK, Tenn. - The Mars Hill baseball team (18-30) was defeated by Catawba (29-22) by a score of 7-6 in 10 innings Thursday afternoon to kickoff the 2022 South Atlantic Conference Baseball Championships.
The Indians scored seven unanswered runs, including a four-run ninth inning, sending the game into extras. Harris Jackson plated the tying run off a sacrifice fly that allowed Dylan Driver to score the tying run.
In the bottom of the tenth, a Mars Hill error allowed Zack Miller to score the game-winning run, completing the comeback.
Mars Hill scored the first six runs of the game, plating three apiece in the third and fifth innings. A Catawba error allowed Ruben Trillo to score the first run of the contest. Back-to-back RBI groundouts by Alex Naran and Trey Putnam extended the Lions' lead to three.
Kyle Jenkins' RBI single in the top of the fifth plated Chapel Matson, putting the Lions up by four. A bases loaded walk drawn by Jordan Lathe allowed Naran to score the Lions fifth run and Putnam later scored off of a fielder's choice.
In the bottom of the seventh, Catawba broke the scoreless bid with a RBI double off the bat of Miller. Cameron Mills drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth to plate the second Indians' run. Dylan Driver and Henderson Lentz each recorded RBI singles in the bottom of the ninth.
Ruben Trillo and the Catawba duo of Driver and Miller each recorded two hits to lead their respective teams. Lentz led all players with two RBI.
Ryan Street picked up the win, throwing one perfect inning. Sam Kaplan was credited with the loss, allowing one unearned run and one hit in 0.1 innings thrown.
