Lions down King on road in non-conference play
The Mars Hill baseball team (18-26) defeated King (18-19) by a score of 10-3 Wednesday afternoon on the road in non-conference play.
BRISTOL, Tenn. - The Mars Hill baseball team (18-26) defeated King (18-19) by a score of 10-3 Wednesday afternoon on the road in non-conference play.
Paul Martin opened the scoring in the top of the second inning with a two-run home run to left, plating Zach Weaver. Weaver, in the top of the third, bolstered the Lions' lead with a grand slam, putting the Lions up by six entering the bottom half of the frame.
The Tornado went on to score the next two runs of the game off of a RBI groundout in the third and a Chase Hilliard RBI single in the bottom of the fourth.
Mars Hill plated four in the eighth, highlighted by Chapel Matson's two-run single to center. Following a Trey Putnam RBI single later in the inning, Weaver picked up his fifth RBI of the game with a single that plated Matson.
King's Deric Graham slammed a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth, but their comeback bid fell short as the Lions picked up the 10-3 win.
Weaver and Martin led the Lions with two hits apiece. Preston Steele led all players with three hits. Both Martin and Matson added two RBI apiece for Mars Hill.
Quentin Graves earned the win, throwing two scoreless innings. Michael Cordova was credited with the loss, allowing six runs on five hits in two innings.
The Lions take to the road on Friday, April 22 to kickoff their final series of the 2022 season, playing No. 2 Wingate. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
