Lions open 2022 season against Belmont Abbey
The Mars Hill baseball team (0-1) was defeated by Belmont Abbey (1-0) in their 2022 season opener Tuesday afternoon by a score of 10-1.

BELMONT, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (0-1) was defeated by Belmont Abbey (1-0) in their 2022 season opener Tuesday afternoon by a score of 10-1.
The Crusaders led 3-0 after the first, highlighted by Sean Johnson's leadoff home run.
After four scoreless innings, Mars Hill cut into the deficit as Trevor Bailey plated Scottie Lee with a RBI single in the top of the sixth.
Belmont Abbey answered back with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Adam Overcash drove in two runs with a triple that put the Crusaders up 6-1. Back-to-back RBI singles from Connor Tucker and Matty Bapst put Belmont Abbey up by seven.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Crusaders tacked on two more runs off of Ben Ferguson's two-run double.
Ferguson led all players with three RBI and he, along with Ben Gobbel, led all players with two hits.
Brendan Simonds picked up the win, allowing two hits in three innings of play. Dustin Revis was credited with the loss, allowing three runs off three hits in one inning.
The Lions take to the road on Friday when they face Saint Leo to kickoff a four-game series. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
