MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's soccer team (4-3-1, 2-2 SAC) defeated Lincoln Memorial (1-5-2, 0-3-1 SAC) by a score of 3-1 Wednesday night inside Meares Stadium.
Sebastian Bertilsson netted the Lions' first tally of the night with just 1:22 remaining in the first half. Jeppe Christensen, driving down the right wing, crossed the ball into the box, deflecting off of Kevonte Willoughby-Williams and landing at Bertilsson's right foot. The senior striker pinged it off the near post and scored the opening goal.
The goal marks Bertilsson's seventh of the season, establishing a new career-high.
The Lions tacked on two more goals in the second half, beginning with Peter Plougmand's fourth of the season in the 81st minute. Wiloughby-Williams' pass found Plougmand open on the far side of the net and the freshman forward buried the eventual game-winning goal.
Willoughby-Williams scored his sixth of the season as the Railsplitters' defense could not clear the ball in front of their goalkeeper, allowing him to tuck the ball in low on the far post for the Lions' third goal of the evening.
Less than two minutes later, Arkin Ulusoy cut the Lions' lead down to two as he netted his third of the season.
Willoughby-Williams picked up four points on the night (1G, 2A), leading all players. Bertilsson led all players with five shot attempts, four on goal.
Brennan Whalen made four saves for his fourth win of the season. Robin Hermann stopped seven in the loss.
Mars Hill returns to the pitch on Saturday, October 2 when they take on Limestone. The road contest is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
