MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's basketball team (2-2) was defeated by Claflin (3-0) by a score of 88-79 Sunday afternoon.
The Panthers shot 63 percent from the floor in the first half, carrying a 13-point advantage into the half. They opened the half on a 10-2 run. Mars Hill battled throughout the opening 20 minutes, taking their first lead of the contest with under eight to play in the first, going up 24-23.
The Panthers, leading 33-29 with 4:31 left in the first half, pulled away by going on an 11-2 run to close out the frame.
Timothy McElroy netted nine points followed by Allen Hatchett's eight to lead Claflin. Prosper Obidiebube led the Lions with eight points.
In the final minute of the second half, after trailing by as many as 20, the Lions closed the gap to eight, but were unable to complete the comeback bid. Kory Davis led the Lions with 14 points followed by 12 from Trey Belin. Hatchett led the Panthers with 10 in the half.
Claflin shot over 62 percent from the floor to the Lions' 43 on the day. Hatchett led the Panthers with 18 points while McElroy ended the night with 17.
Davis led the Lions with 18 points while Belin added 15 for Mars Hill. Isaiah Jones led all players with 12 rebounds and four steals.
Mars Hill returns to the floor on Tuesday, November 22 when they face Young Harris. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
