Mars Hill downs Belmont Abbey, sweeps SAC/CC Challenge
The Mars Hill men’s basketball team (2-0) defeated Belmont Abbey (0-2) by a score of 81-76 to close out the South Atlantic Conference/Conference Carolinas Challenge Saturday evening inside Stanford Arena.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill men's basketball team (2-0) defeated Belmont Abbey (0-2) by a score of 81-76 to close out the South Atlantic Conference/Conference Carolinas Challenge Saturday evening inside Stanford Arena.
Mars Hill shot nearly 61 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, hitting 17-of-28 shots, including 6-of-9 from beyond the arc. Isaiah Jones led all players with 13 points in the half, shooting 5-of-6 from the floor. Kory Davis added 10 for the Lions followed by Jackson Reid's six.
Belmont Abbey was led by Wade Jackson's 11 points in the frame as the Crusaders shot 48 percent from the floor. Charles Solomon led all players with four rebounds in the first half.
The Crusaders outscored the Lions in the second half, 46-39, including an 8-2 run midway through the frame that pulled them within two. The teams traded baskets throughout the frame and Belmont Abbey would tie the game at 62 with 8:02 remaining.
Mars Hill would respond with an 8-0 run over two minutes to rebuild their lead and hold on for their second straight win.
Mason Taylor led the Crusaders with 13 points in the half followed by Solomon's 11. The Lions were led offensively by Davis who netted 15 in the second. Prosper Obidiebube collected six points in the final 20 minutes of play.
Wade led the Crusaders with 18 points while Taylor collected 17. Solomon led all players with eight rebounds.
Davis led all players with 25 points while Jones ended the night with 17 points, four steals, and four rebounds.
The Lions return to the court on Wednesday, November 16 when they face Young Harris. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. inside Stanford Arena.
