Lions downed by Florida Tech

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team (2-3) was defeated by Florida Tech (3-2) by a score of 21-7 Sunday afternoon.
The Panthers scored seven in the first quarter, holding the Lions to just two goals. Samantha Newton and Sydney Joyce recorded the Mars Hill markers while Florida Tech spread the wealth with seven different goal scorers.
The teams each scored three goals in the second as Joyce, Haley Stallings, and Mina Muirhead netted the Lions' tallies. Sophia Scichilone and Jennifer Boyle picked up their second goals of the contest while Kailee O'Brien scored her first.
Florida Tech opened the third scoring six straight goals, five with the man-advantage. Tiffany Saavedra scored the lone Mars Hill goal in the third. Boyle and Kayla Minton both finished off their hat-tricks.
Scichilone netted her third in the fourth quarter for the hat-trick while Karly Liebendorfer struck twice in the final seven minutes of play. Newton scored her second goal of the game for Mars Hill's lone fourth quarter marker.
The trio of Scichilone, Boyle, and Gillian Craig each posted four points (3g, 1a) while Johnson (2g, 2a) also added four points in the contest. Newton and Joyce (2g) led the Lions with two points apiece.
The Lions open South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday, March 1 when they face Lenoir-Rhyne on the road. The contest is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
