Lions' strong fourth quarter falls short of comeback versus Pioneers

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill women's basketball team (3-5, 0-2 SAC) was defeated by Tusculum (9-1, 2-0) by a score of 80-68 Saturday afternoon.
Tusculum carried a two-point lead into the second quarter, 19-17, before doubling the Lions in the second, 25-12. The Pioneers shot nearly 58 percent from floor, going 11-of-19 in the second to build their 15-point halftime lead.
Janette Hanni led the Lions after the first 10 minutes of play with eight points followed by seven from Jo Snow. Jami Tham led Tusculum with 14 points and nine rebounds after the first half.
The Pioneers carried over their offensive prowess, outscoring the Lions 17-8 in the third quarter, going up 61-37 entering the final 10 minutes of the contest. Mars Hill responded in the fourth, outscoring Tusculum 31-19, but ultimately fell short in their comeback bid.
Tham led all players with 31 points and 15 rebounds. Deidre Cheremond added 15 points and eight rebounds.
The Lions were led by Snow's 28 points. Maddie Gillie added 12 and led the team with seven rebounds.
Mars Hill returns to action on Wednesday, December 14 when they take to the road to face Carson-Newman. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. in Jefferson City, Tennessee.
