Mars Hill defeated by No. 16 Wingate
The Mars Hill softball team (17-22, 5-15 SAC) was swept by No. 16 Wingate (39-10, 17-5 SAC) by scores of 8-3 and 8-0, respectively.
WINGATE, N.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (17-22, 5-15 SAC) was swept by No. 16 Wingate (39-10, 17-5 SAC) by scores of 8-3 and 8-0, respectively.
GAME ONE: WU 8, MHU 3
Wingate used a five-run sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie and escape game one with the win.
Kaylee Hobgood's RBI triple in the sixth scored Danielle Kirchhofer for the game-winning run. The Bulldogs added four more runs in the inning, highlighted by Hannah Reeves' two-run home run.
Mars Hill opened the scoring in the top of the first as Jessica Senn plated Ella Brooks with a RBI single. In the bottom of the second, Wingate scored three to go up 3-1 entering the third.
Following a scoreless third, Farley Park pulled the Lions within one with a solo home run to left field. In the top of the sixth, Mars Hill tied the game at three with a Kristyn Ezzo RBI single that scored Park.
Hobgood led all players with three hits and she, along with Reeves, led the Bulldogs with two RBI apiece. Brooks, Park, Miranda Marks, and Abby Gatch each posted two hits for the Lions.
GAME TWO: WU 8, MHU 0 (6 Innings)
The Bulldogs held Mars Hill to just two hits in game two, completing the sweep in six innings.
Wingate scored four in the bottom of the third, highlighted by Hannah Reeves' two-run single down the right field line. In the fourth, a two-run single from Heaven Maness extended the Bulldogs' lead to six.
Leading 7-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, Savanna Brooks' solo home run to left closed out the ball game.
Katie Todd and Miranda Marks recorded the lone hits for Mars Hill in game two.
The Lions return home on Thursday, April 20 when they host Coker at Ponder Field. First pitch for the penultimate doubleheader of the season is set for 2 p.m.
