Dawkins nets 22 in Lions' season opener

WINGATE, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's basketball team (0-1) opened their 2023-24 season on the road, falling to Converse (1-0) by a score of 80-62.
Leading 40-34 at the end of the first half, the Valkyries shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half with C.J. Jamison leading the team with 11 points. Earl Burgess III and Uzziah Dawkins each added seven points apiece. Jamison also led Converse with five rebounds.
Leading all players in the first half, Marcus Rodgers went 6-of-8 from the floor, draining three three-pointers for 15 points. Kaydn Dawkins, in his first game since the 2021-22 season, netted 10 points in the first half. Kory Davis led the team with five rebounds and two steals.
In the second half, Converse hit 52 percent of their shots to the Lions' 36, extending their lead and holding on for the win. Dawkins led the Valkyries with 10 points followed by seven from Jamison.
Dawkins led the Lions with 12 in the second half of play followed by five from Kendall Davis. Rodgers led the team with four rebounds.
Jamison led Converse with 18 points and nine rebounds. Dawkins added 17 points followed by 13 from Burgess III.
Dawkins led all players with 22 points and added four rebounds and three assists. Rodgers ended the contest with 17 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Davis added nine points and seven rebounds.
Mars Hill returns to action on Saturday, November 11 when they face Belmont Abbey. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
