Mars Hill picks up split with Flying Fleet
The Mars Hill baseball team (1-4) picked up the split versus Erskine (2-3) Friday afternoon. The Lions lost game one by a score of 5-3, but rallied to take game two by a mark of 10-4.
MARION, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (1-4) picked up the split versus Erskine (2-3) Friday afternoon. The Lions lost game one by a score of 5-3, but rallied to take game two by a mark of 10-4.
GAME ONE: EC 5, MHU 3
The Flying Fleet's two-run seventh inning proved to be the turning point in game one, allowing Erskine to come from behind and take the win.
With the bases loaded, Justin Fox cracked a single to center field that allowed Kane Fisher and Cal Bochino to cross home and give Erskine their first lead of the contest.
The Lions cut into the deficit in the top of the eighth as Rubin Trillo drove home Scottie Lee with a RBI single up the middle. Gregory Sanders, in the bottom of half of the inning, added an insurance run with a single down the right field line, proving a two-run cushion.
The Lions struck first off of Tyler Lala's two-run single up the middle in the top of the third. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Erskine knotted the game at two after Cal Bochino's game-tying RBI single that allowed Zach Carter to score.
Graham McCurry picked up the win, allowing one run on two hits in two innings pitched. Carlton Jackson suffered the loss. Jared Mathewson threw a strong six innings, striking out eight.
GAME TWO: MHU 10, EC 4
Mars Hill used a four-run third inning to propel them to their first win of the season.
Heading into the frame up 2-1, Casey Mawhinney began the scoring with a two-run double to left center field, plating Austin Treadway and Austin Purser. Jordan Lathe followed up with a RBI single down the left field line that plated Mawhinney.
Cody Cline put the Lions up 6-2 with a RBI bunt single in the fourth while Ruben Trillo picked up his second RBI of the day with a single to center in the top of the fifth, putting the Lions up by five entering the sixth.
The teams traded runs in the sixth inning, but it was Trillo's two-run home run to left field in the top of the ninth that further put the game out of reach.
Trillo went 3-for-5 from the plate, picking up three RBI. Mawhinney, Purser, and Treadway each collected two hits apiece.
AJ Chacon picked up his first win with the Lions, striking out six in seven innings, allowing three runs on three hits.
The Lions take to the road on Sunday, February 9 when they face Shorter. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
