Marshall scores 26 on road versus Wolves

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (2-16, 0-12 SAC) was defeated by a score of 93-58 versus Newberry (9-8, 6-6 SAC) on the road Saturday afternoon.
Newberry dominated play in the first quarter, outscoring the Lions 21-4 with a balanced attack. Ericka Wiseley led the Wolves with four points in the frame followed by Courtney Virgo and Kelsey McDermott's three apiece. De'Ja Marshall scored all four points for the Lions in the first 10 minutes of play.
The Wolves opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run to further their lead. The Lions, later in the frame, strung together a 10-4 run to cut the deficit to 18 with under three minutes to play. Marshall led all players in the second quarter, netting 10 points for the Lions. From the Newberry bench, Julie Kinard led her squad with nine points.
In the highest scoring frame, the teams combined for 49 points with the Lions hitting over 58 percent of their shots from the floor. The Wolves netted 15 points from behind the arc, hitting half of their three-pointer attempts with Talia Roberts hitting two and lead the team with six points in the quarter.
The fourth quarter saw the most closely contested 10 minutes of play with Newberry edging Mars Hill, 18-17. Both Marshall and Kelsey Brett scored six points to lead their respective teams offensively.
Newberry had five players register double-digit points led by Kinard's 21 on the day. Roberts recorded 14 while McDermott ended the day with 13 points. Marshall led all players with 26 points and collected six rebounds. Gabby Gianikos and Alexis Pardue each added nine for the Lions.
Mars Hill returns to action on Wednesday, January 29 when they host UVa-Wise inside Chambers Gymnasium. Tipoff for "Fill the Hill" is slated for 5:30 p.m.
