Cutcher tosses one-hit shutout to lead #17 Wingate past Patriots in NCAA Tourney opener
Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior right-hander Raechel Cutcher took a perfect game into the seventh inning Thursday afternoon, leading the second-seeded and 17th-ranked Bulldogs to a 2-0 victory over seventh-seeded Francis Marion University on day one of the NCAA Division II softball Southeast Regional. Wingate improves to 45-14 on the season, advancing to Friday's winner's bracket game at 10:30 a.m. The Patriots fall to 41-12 overall and will play in an elimination game Friday at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs are making their second straight NCAA Tournament appearance, third in the last four years and eight in program history. This is the first time the 'Dogs have won the NCAA Tourney opener since the 2014 season when Wingate downed Lenoir-Rhyne 8-0.
Bears Beat Carson-Newman 6-4 In Opening Game of Southeast Regional
Wingate, N.C.-- The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team defeated Carson-Newman 6-4 in their opening round game of the NCAA Southeast Regional as Lora Beth Wood crushed her 11th home run of the season and Morgan Beeler won her 23rd game of the year in the circle as Beeler threw the complete game. The win was the Bears third straight win over the Eagles in the NCAA Tournament. The Bears will now face the host Wingate tomorrow at 10:30 AM with the winner advancing to the championship game on Saturday.
Rally comes up short against No. 25 LR in regional opener
WINGATE, N.C. – Carson-Newman (31-17) got the tying run in scoring position in the seventh, but couldn't collect one more timely knock as a defensive minded No. 25 Lenoir-Rhyne (37-12) prevailed 6-4 Thursday afternoon at the WU Softball Complex.
With the win, Lenoir-Rhyne squares off with Wingate at 10:30 a.m. Friday for the right to play in the championship game Saturday. The Eagles face elimination at 1 p.m. against Francis Marion, who lost 2-0 to Wingate.
LMU Falls to Columbus State in Opening Round of NCAA Regional
DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Lincoln Memorial fell to Columbus State on Thursday afternoon with a final score of 3-1. Madison Henry scored the lone run for the Railsplitters and Katie Tuggle recorded one RBI.
Lincoln Memorial moves to the elimination bracket as they face King (TN) at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. King fell to top-seeded North Georgia 8-0 earlier today.
