Anderson Earns 2019 South Atlantic Conference Softball Championship
SALISBURY, N.C. – The fifth-seeded Anderson softball finished off a thrilling conference campaign by winning two games on Sunday, April 28 to win their first SAC Championship since 2014. The Trojans downed top seed Lincoln Memorial in the semifinals 10-6 and upset No. 3 Carson-Newman 13-11 in the finals.
In the top half of the first inning in the championship game, the Trojans jumped out to a 7-0 lead, aided by four Eagle errors. After three innings, Carson-Newman had bounced back to lead 9-7 and the score held until the sixth. With Anderson running short of outs, freshman Kayson Boatner came up clutch with a three-run home run to help the Trojans reclaim the lead. Anderson added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh on a pair of RBI singles. Carson-Newman tried to mount a comeback with a Lacie Rinus two-run homer, but fell short, giving the Trojans the title.
At the plate, Joshlyn Martin went 4-for-5 with two doubles, scored three times, and batted in a pair of runners, while Meghan Majeski went 3-for-4 and crossed the plate twice. Boatner drilled her second home run of the tournament and 15th of the season on her way to a three RBI outing. The win went to Kayla Pepper, who pitched in relief, after she went 4.1 innings, allowing two runs and five hits and striking out three.
By virtue of the title, Anderson has earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The NCAA selection show is schedule for May 6 at 10:00am, and, at that time, the Trojans will learn of their destination and seed. The rest of the SAC teams will await to hear of their postseason fate as well.
The All-Tournament team and Most Valuable Player will be announced on Monday.
