North Georgia Downs Lenoir-Rhyne In Softball Super Regional
DAHLONEGA, GA -- The No. 1-ranked North Georgia Softball Team (50-0) continued its perfect season with a 15-0 victory over eighth-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne (53-9) Saturday afternoon at Haines and Carolyn Hill Stadium to advance to the Women's College World Series.
The contest was the final game of the 2010 NCAA Division II Softball Southeast Super Regional Tournament, hosted by North Georgia. The Saints, who won the best-of-three series in two games, will now play in the Women's College World Series beginning on Thursday, May 27, in St. Joseph, Mo.
The Saints opened the scoring in the top of the third inning on a two-run double by Courtney McGuire (Atlanta, Ga.).
North Georgia then broke the game open with a three-run fourth inning highlighted by a two-run triple by Kasey Knight (Watkinsville, Ga.). The Saints added a run earlier in the frame on a throwing error by the Bears.
The Saints closed out the scoring with 10 runs in the top of the fifth inning to run-rule the Bears. North Georgia's Lauren Dykes (Dallas, Ga.) hit a three-run home run and Leslee Smith (Lexington, Ga.) added a two-run round-tripper in the frame. North Georgia scored all 10 runs with two outs in the inning.
Dykes and Knight each had two hits and three runs batted in to lead North Georgia's 16-hit attack.
North Georgia's Sarah Phillips (Powell, Ohio) remained perfect on the year as she improved to 43-0. Phillips allowed just three hits while striking out seven in five innings of work. L-R sophomore Dawon Millwood (Hixson, Tenn.) fell to 21-4 after suffering the loss.
