Lenoir-Rhyne’s Atkins, Catawba’s Hudson Named Softball Players Of The Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Lenoir-Rhyne University's Sarah Atkins has been named the South Atlantic Conference Softball Player of the Week and Catawba College's Kelsie Hudson earned league Pitcher of the Week honors for the week ending April 4, announced conference officials Monday.
Atkins, a sophomore catcher from Newport News, Va. (Warwick HS), batted .500 (five-for-10) with two home runs and seven runs batted in to lead Lenoir-Rhyne to a 4-0 week with a pair of doubleheader sweeps of Mars Hill and Carson-Newman. Atkins hit a three-run home run in each game of a SAC doubleheader showdown at Carson-Newman. In the nightcap, Atkins' round-tripper highlighted a four-run seventh inning as the Bears rallied to win by a 7-6 score over the Eagles. Atkins, the 2009 SAC Freshman Of The Year and an all-league pick, is currently batting .309 with six home runs and 35 runs batted in for No. 11 Lenoir-Rhyne (37-5, 10-0).
Hudson, a freshman pitcher from Mechanicsville, Va. (Lee-Davis HS), won both of her starts in the week, including posting a 4-1 win agaisnt No. 24 Wingate. The freshman tossed two complete games and had 2.00 ERA. In 14 innings, Hudson scattered 12 hits with three walks and four strikeouts. She allowed five hits in the win over Wingate and kept the Bulldogs off the scoreboard the final five innings. Hudson improved to 8-2 on the year and has a 4.04 ERA.
