ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Lenoir-Rhyne University's Kat Rivers has been named the South Atlantic Conference Softball Player of the Week and Lenoir-Rhyne's Dawon Millwood earned league Pitcher of the Week honors for the week ending March 28, announced conference officials Monday.
Rivers, a junior shortstop from Royston, Ga. (Franklin County HS), batted .438 (seven-for-16) with two home runs and five runs batted in to lead No. 16 Lenoir-Rhyne (33-5, 6-0) to a 4-0 week with a pair of doubleheader sweeps of SAC-foes No. 19 Wingate and Tusculum on the road. Rivers hit a home run and drove in two runs in each victory against the Pioneers Saturday to break the school and league single-season home run (17). Rivers, a 2009 all-conference and all-region pick, leads L-R in batting (.468), runs scored (46), home runs (17) and runs batted in (42) this season. Rivers has also helped Lenoir-Rhyne establish a new South Atlantic Conference team record for home runs in a season with 64.
Millwood, a sophomore from Hixson, Tenn. (Hixson HS), went 2-0 for the week and threw a pair of shutouts to lead Lenoir-Rhyne to four wins in four South Atlantic Conferencer road contests. Millwood started the week by limiting No. 19 Wingate to just three hits while striking out seven batters in a 5-0 victory in game one of a twinbill Wednesday before a two-hit, 12-strikeout performance versus Tusculum Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader. Millwood, a 2009 All-SAC Second-Team honoree, is now 14-2 on the season with a 1.26 earned run average, eight shutouts and 150 strikeouts for No. 16 Lenoir-Rhyne (33-5, 6-0).
