Catawba’s Gibbs, Newberry’s Huckestein Named Softball Players Of The Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Catawba College's Tara Gibbs has been named the South Atlantic Conference Softball Player of the Week and Newberry College's Amanda Huckestein earned league Pitcher of the Week honors for the week ending March 14, announced conference officials Monday.
Gibbs, a freshman catcher from Waynesville, N.C. (Tuscola HS), batted .421 on the week with 12 RBI and two home runs to help Catawba to a perfect 6-0 week. She ended the first Alderson-Broaddus game with a grand slam and delivered a seventh-inning game-winning RBI double in the 10-9 win in game two. She went 3-for-3 with three RBI in the second game against Pfeiffer. She has now collected 46 RBI with 10 home runs on the season.
Huckestein, a junior from Port Charlotte, Fla. (Concordia (Neb.) Univ.), earned two wins in two appearances last week with both coming against Coker on Sunday afternoon. In the first game of the doubleheader, Huckestein one hit the Cobras and carried a perfect game all the way into the fifth inning. She struck out 10 of the first 12 batters she faced and amassed 15 strikeouts before the game was done. She allowed just three hitters to reach base in the game. Huckestein picked up the win in the second game of the doubleheader as well as she came into the game to pitch in the seventh and was the pitcher of record when Newberry came from behind to win in the bottom of the seventh.
