Carson-Newman’s Whitney Hickam, Mars Hill’s Katie Blankenship Named Softball Players Of The Week

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Carson Newman's Whitney Hickam was named the South Atlantic Conference Softball Player of the Week and Mars Hill's Katie Blankenship was chosen as the league's Pitcher of the Week it was announced by the conference office on Monday.

Hickam was 8-for-17 (.471) with 13 RBIs and four runs scored in a 3-1 week for Carson-Newman.

In a doubleheader with Belmont-Abbey last week, Hickam hit consecutive grand slams to help the Lady Eagles to a 15-3 win in game one. In total in the game one victory over B-A, Hickam was 3-for-4 with 8 RBIs and three runs scored.

The Knoxville, Tenn. native concluded the two-game set with Belmont-Abbey going 7-for-9 from the plate.

A native of Candler, N.C., Blankenship was 2-0 last week for the Lions with a 1.17 ERA.

Blankenship pitched 12.0 innings in the two games, giving up just five hits. The Enka High School product fanned five batters on the week.

The SAC Player and Pitcher of the Week are voted on by the league's sports information directors.
