Wingate’s Wallace and White Earn Softball All-Region Honors
Wingate, N.C.----Two Wingate University softball players have been named to the 2003 NCAA Division II All-South Atlantic Region team, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) announced Wednesday afternoon.
Wingate junior pitcher Katie Wallace (Naples, Fla.) and junior outfielder/first baseman Stephanie White (Eatonton, Ga.) were both named second team All-South Atlantic Region. White was named second team All-South Atlantic Region as a utility player.
The 2003 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament MVP, Wallace is 26-8 overall entering the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional in Jacksonville, Fla. A three-time All-SAC player, Wallace tossed 29 complete games while striking out 185 and walking 53.
Wallace's control is one of her strong points. She has not thrown a wild pitch in 420 1/3 consecutive innings, dating to her freshman season. Wingate opponents hit a paltry .183 against Wallace this season. She was the 2001 South Atlantic Conference "freshman of the year."
White joined the Bulldogs this season after two years at Presbyterian College. She earned first team All-SAC honors this year as a first baseman. She moved to the outfield late in the season. White leads the Bulldogs with a .383 batting average. She has hit safely in 16 of Wingate's last 17 games.
In addition to topping the Wingate charts in hitting, White led the Bulldogs in runs (38), stolen bases (15), sacrifice bunts (11) and on-base percentage (.428).
Wingate was the only school from the South Atlantic Conference represented on the 2003 NCAA Division II All-South Atlantic Region teams. Eighteen of the 28 players who were named to the first and second teams will be playing this week in the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional in Jacksonville, Fla. Wingate opens regional play tomorrow (Thursday) morning at 11 a.m. versus number 22 Columbus State University.
