ROCK HILL, S.C. – Queens scored a pair of second-half goals and All-Conference keeper Montrell Morgan stopped five Anderson shots on goal as the Royals claimed the 2013 Food Lion SAC Soccer Championship men's title on Sunday afternoon, 2-0.
Queens' victory marks the school's first SAC Tournament title since joining the conference in July. The Royals also become the 11th team in league history to win both the regular season and tournament titles in the same season.
After a scoreless and physical first half, Queens broke through in the 60th minute on a goal by midfielder Ryan King – his third of the season. The Royals then added an insurance goal with under a minute remaining, this time off the foot of All-SAC midfielder Thiago Andrade, his 15th in 2013.
Andrade also assisted on Queens' first goal, and was selected as the SAC Tournament MVP. He was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammates Erick Suarez – who had an assist on Sunday – Kevin Anderson and Morgan.
Anderson, despite outshooting Queens 19-8 in the match, fell short in its attempt to win the program's fourth-straight SAC Tournament title. The loss also marked AU's first in the event since joining the conference in 2010.
Trojan keeper Bo Haug made a pair of saves and forward Andre Carle led the Trojans with four shots. Midfielder Martin Brain – who netted the game winner in Friday's semifinals – defender Alex Delpy and defender Lars Zimmerman were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Rounding out the All-Tournament Team were Lincoln Memorial's Yuri Passos and Leonardo da Silva, and Mars Hill's Gregg Munn and Felipe Ferraro.
Queens, Anderson and the rest of the conference will await word on their postseason fates when the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship bracket is announced Monday at 7 p.m. on a live NCAA.com selection show.
